What is the RS232 port good for on a Yamaha 5890? I read this:

rs 232 port for home automation control and easily connected to computer for future surround upgrades

and:

Available RS232 protocol provides hi degree of programability.

But is it actually going to do me any good? Can someone explain more what uses it is for? Thanks

If you don't have whole home automation, it probably is not going to be any value added. It isn't something that I would say should be part of the primary deciding factor in a receiver unless you DO need this functionality. If you like the more important features of the receiver, the RS232 is just there, whether you use it or not. My receiver has it too; I've never used it.

OK, thanks. I already have the receiver, I just wondered what it was normally used for.

it's good for Crestron and AMX. Major install stuff, so majrity of everyday people won't use it. :) But is does some really cool stuff.
