Yamaha describes different series of receivers, prefixes RX-V, RX-Z, & HTR. Units in the HTR series appear to be identical to those in the HTR series, judging by features, appearance, weight, dimensions, and cost. Are identical units in fact offered in both series? If not, what are the differences? Also, are Yamaha receivers reasonable choices in the lower price ranges, for instance the HTR 5550?

Yamaha introduced the HTR series to have a presence at the mass-market stores (like Best Buy) and not alienated their more upscale dealers. They are essentially the same a the RX and RV models, except for some appearance changes and the way the power is rated. The main difference is that you can only “go so far” at the mass-market stores – Yamaha reserves their best models exclusively for the upscale shops. Quality wise, the HTR models are as good as the RV and RX models, as you can see from the reviews at audioreview.com.

Here is a link to Yamaha's web site that explaines the differences between the RX and HTR lines:

buy only the rxv730 and up, although if you don't care about the remote, on-screen display, or phono input; the rxv630 equivalent , the htr5560 is now available at some retailers for $350 (@$150 less than msrp)....this unit has their ToPArt design amps and is a great steal at this price!
