Hey, do any of you have DVDs from different regions? I have seen some posts on the IGN boards today from people claiming that their XBOXs will play region 2 DVDs just fine. Can any of you guys confirm this? I don't think they are lying, but I'm just wondering if they are confused and the DVDs they have are actually all-region DVDs.

Unless it converts PAL to NTSC, no reason to get all worked up.

Just as I thought, apparently the first couple people were just confused. Someone confirmed that Region 2 did not work...said a message popped up saying the DVD was the wrong region. Here is the link to the thread:

Over at the international dvd forum at dvdtalk.com, someone claimed they were able to play the Hong Kong Legends release of Drunken Master which is Region 0 and PAL. This seems reasonable, but I haven't seen any supporting claims so I don't know for sure.

Ok, I just tried a region 0, PAL disc of Iron Monkey and it does work so it looks like it does do PAL -> NTSC conversion. If someone can just find a way around the region restrictions, the X-box will be a pretty nice region free player.

I can also confirm that the XBox can convert PAL to NTSC.

But I can also confirm that it will only play Region 1 (and Region 0) titles.

The HKL stuff that is region free plays fine on it.

    agh!

my HKL stuff is playing pretty well too!

man, and I'd bought my Malata specifically for PAL to NTSC conversion. Ah well, not like my XBox could do the custom X/Y scaling, nor is it region free.

Rather cool that the XBox could do that though....and I reallllllly wouldn't be surprised if in a few months people don't figure out how to unlock progressive playback for DVDs and to remove region checking.. if/when that happens, I have a sneaking suspicion that more HTFers would be picking up their own xboxen

Is there a reliable listing somewhere of which Hong Kong Legends releases are Region 0?
Man, I wish the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sets were Region 0... [IMG]

I know there's a product coming soon for the UK xbox that will convert it for region free use:
    http://www.play.com/Play247.asp?pag...OX&title=100483
Select "xbox" in the drop down search and type in "region x"
Any news for the U.S. xbox version of this or a similar product?
Since the U.S. xbox already does pal and ntsc. I thought the hardware was the same and since it's a software product that makes the xbox region free (alters firmware I guess), the software product for the U.K. should work on the U.S. xbox.
Maybe the laws in the states prohibit the distribution of such a product here but not in the UK or the rest of Europe.
As soon as I can get my hands on this disc, I'll try it and post the results here.

Sorry for the sidetrack but does anyone have a reputable e-tailer that sells all or most of the HKL discs and ships here to the states?
When the region hack gets finalized, I want to be ready. [IMG]
    Thanks.

Now that it's out elsewhere in the world, has anyone tried purchasing another regions DVD remote, and playing different region discs? I know this was a theory thrown around here, and it's gotten me all excited-I've got to know!

James, you might want to ask that question in the Non-region1 forum. Personally, I've used DDDHouse in the past for Hong Kong & Japanese films without any problems.

Once you plug the dongle in, the region code is copied from the dongle to the hard drive and you are stuck in that region.

I wish I'd never plugged in.

One could theoretically get a japanese dongle and you'd get R2 NTSC and R2 PAL; a nice compliment to a 'main' R1 NTSC player.

I have tried my R0 PAL Midnight Oil disc and it works great in my R1 NTSC Xbox.

I've seen reports of people plugging in /both/ dongles. I want something more concrete than a couple of usenet style reports though.

And further reports have proven it to be utter utter nonsense. The person reporting it tried it with a region 0 Criterion DVD :-(

    Bah.
