The PS2 is going to be the winner until next spring, thats a given. Why? Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry, ICO, Final Fantasy X, etc. Around next March, the power may shift to the XB or GCN (or stay on the PS2). If you are going to get any console, next spring will be the most difficult time to pick. The PS2 will have a lot of great games, but the X-Box will, too. The GCN will probably get its best games next summer/fall.
Also, we find out if "Metal Gear Two" is worth a hoot - remember the hype around the Bouncer.
Then again, The Bouncer still had excellent graphics and is one of the only PS2 games with 5.1 at all. Metal Gear Solid 2 will be longer and offers way more than The Bouncer. Actually, many consider the MGS2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders to be the best game on the PS2, and its only a demo! The demo can be completed in less than 10 minutes, or it can take you over 45 minutes. There are also a lot of hidden things in the demo, and the final game should have way more.
So in short, the hype around MGS2 will be true.

I'm so ashamed....and weak...
I pre-ordered an XBox from my local EB.
Nintendo's asinine no-preorder policy, combined with falling in love with "Cel Damage" after seeing it on "Extended Play" last weekend hooked me... Guess GCN waits until after Christmas, now...
Call me a loser. I can take it. :)

If you are pissed about the GCN thing, get a GameBoy Advance to hold you off until the XB and then GCN. I have one and its great.
I heard Nintendo will start preorders in October, but nobody is really sure.

Went to my local EB and pre-ordered as well. signed up for Oddworld, Shrek, and DOA 3. ordered the HDTV connector thing as well & the extra controller part of the bundle.
Had to order it. I may cancel it and get a PS2; depends on how the game situation develops between now and then. I'm not 100% sold on the Xbox, but darn close. I just want the RPGs; not sure who's going to win that battle, but to me, the choice will be PS2 or Xbox (or maybe both!) :)

Wolf, you're better off with a PS2 if you're looking for RPGs. FFX has not been announced for any system other than PS2 (FFXI will be on X-box, but it's a pay-for-play MMRPG).
Other than Project Ego, which is at least a year and half off, I can't think of any other hardcore RPGs announced for the X-box. Same with the GCN. In terms of RPG software, the PS2 is going to be the undisputed king for a while.

I thought the screens for Cel Damage were kind of blah. I'd love to see it in motion though.

I guess I stand corrected. I probably will have to add Morrowind to my list, as Bethesda is a talented developer. I don't know why they have Black and White listed as an RPG. I own the PC version and it most definitely is NOT an RPG, leaning more towards an RTS-style of play. If Project Ego delivers on its promise, it could be an extraordinary title.
Once again, though, those are PC developers making the leap to the console. Not to malign their talents, but that transition hasn't always been smooth in the past. Perhaps this time around it won't be so bumpy. RPG's haven't quite been Nintendo's forte, so it's nice to see MS try to gain some ground for a potentially huge gaming audience.
But at least you guys have to admit that the PS2 has the foothold in this genre for the near future -- and that's the nicest thing I've had to say about Sony in a LONG time.

Adam I completely agree with you, but I don't think it will take too long for the Xbox to catch up, there are a lot of unannounced games from Japan still. TGS should be really exciting for Xbox fans. It's sure a great time to be a gamer. :)

I may be about the only RPG fan in the world that never got a PS; thus, not into FF at all. yes, I'll probably live to regret that, but then again, I can probably get a PS1 and all the RPG's worth getting for about $200. I'm kinda past it - never liked the PS graphics honestly, I was in a PC RPG phase when the PS had it's heyday. Now, after playing PC games and DC RPG's like Skies of Arcadia, I can't bring myself to play a PS game on my 55" HDTV.
So, I'm not as excited about FFX as most; though I do admit it looks good. I may change my mind, but things are shaping up for the Xbox in this area.
I'll admit I'm still kinda fence sitting. I am a tech snob though - I don't like buying what I believe to be inferior tech with the PS2 vs. the Xbox - I think the stuff inside the Xbox is just plan superior. Yeah yeah, no need for a flame war, but for now, I'm keeping my preorder, but may very well be carting home a PS2 in november... :)

I agree, Graeme, the stills I've seen (mostly on IGN) have been unimpressive. If you get TechTV, try to catch a re-run of "Extended Play" this week (before Friday, when the new show airs). Imagine playing a Wile E. Coyote/Road Runner cartoon...

Brian,
I've never seen or played Wacky Races, but yes, I've heard it described as "Wacky Races meets Twisted Metal"...

It's been my experience that all screenshots for any game using cell shading just bite -- it has to be seen in motion to be appreciated. That goes for Cell Damage, JSR:F, and the new Zelda. Every one of those looked bad until I had the chance to see it in motion.

Wolf-
Just get a PS2 and then buy all the good PSX RPGs. That way, you will have pretty powerful hardware (not as powerful as the XB or GCN, but its more powerful than the DC) and you will be able to play excellent games like those for PSX and PS2.
