Xbox One X Preorder
Xbox-One-X-1024x576.jpg

Have you preorded your Xbox One X yet? Are you planning on getting one? Should you get one? Is your Xbox One S good enough? Personally, I want one. The pre-order is happening now, pretty much everywhere, to ensure that you get one on or around the release date. From the 100s of reviews that are currently online, most people say that it is pretty amazing. Of course, there are going to be the people that are simply not impressed by anything. To add to my barrage of questions, what about the PS4 Pro? Is that good enough for $100 less?

The new Xbox is going to be able to do some pretty amazing things, but can it replace your theater PC? This is going to depend on the user, but to remind you, here are the specs of the new XBOX:

I’m pretty much a spec whore so I preordered one. Will be going to my local MS store night of to play some Halo and then get my console at midnight. We'll see if it was money well spent or wasted.

Can I hook this up thru my 4K receiver or do I have to hook it up directly to my 4k OLED to get the best picture and sound?

Yeah, it's very unlikely your 4K receiver would molest the video in any way, that's mostly a relic from bygone days. And you'll need the AVR for sure to get the best audio. Going through an AVR gives you so much more A/V flexibility.

Yeah but I heard that it doesn’t do 4k pass thru. Any confirmation that it does?

^ If you're asking me... Do you mean your AVR doesn't do 4K passthrough? (What model?) If so, that would be weird, because that's been around in AVRs before there were even "proper 4K" AVRs (i.e. they couldn't process a 4K video signal, but would just pass it through to the display...I think one of my older AVRs does that). A "full 4K" AVR should definitely have a mode where the video signal is "unmolested" and essentially passes through unmodified. It was true that some AVRs had a hard time doing this (for 1080p), but that was quite a long time ago. Sorry, that's the best I can do...

The proof is in the viewing. If you can't see the diff vs direct-connect to the display, then go with the AVR in the chain. Even better if you have instruments. It's been quite a while since I've seen an AVR that screws up video, but I have seen sources that screw up the 4K video, they're still around...you can notice with instruments.

I have a scorpio edition ordered despite the fact I haven't gone 4K yet (need a TV plus a Receiver so probably next year). The 1080p comparisons look good and the better/more consistent frame rate and shorter loading times were enough to convince me to upgrade my original One.

I think the price is too high to compete with the PS4 Pro (which is inferior overall but priced better for the market) but it is definitely powerful. That said, the early reviews say the biggest issue is the lack of games supporting the leap in performance over the One S. Loading times are better most or all games, but otherwise non-X-upgraded games don't perform or look any different than on the One or One S.

So my question: what games are people excited to play that take advantage of the new hardware?

Well Amazon isn't delivering mine until Thursday... :(

I have bought Forza 7 / Call of Duty: WWII, but have lots of the titles getting the 4K update. I have read 75 games will be "X" enhanced tomorrow, with over a 100 in the first 30 days. Now "Enhanced" means several things. :)

Apparently my local Best Buy is going to sell it starting at 9:01pm PST (12:01EST). I'm going to swing by after dinner tonight to see if I can score one. I have one on preorder for midnight at the local Microsoft store, but if I can score one three hours earlier and not be in line at midnight, I'll pull the trigger. If BB already has a long line, I'll just head home and wait for my MS preorder 3 hours later.

Honestly, there's like maybe 5 games in that entire list that have 4K, HDR, and are interesting enough to play. And all except maybe Assassin's Creed Origins and Call of Duty WWII (I have no interest in CoD, but it probably looks/sounds great) are pretty old.

I'm honestly kind of surprised that MS hasn't gotten more companies on board. It's cool to see something coming soon that will take advantage of this, but what's their flagship day one game? What's the experience that is recent and fresh and absolutely stunning and also exclusive to the One X? Maybe like...Forza?

EDIT: By "more companies on board" I mean with supporting 4K and HDR on day one with some huge titles. World of Tanks? Super Lucky's Tale? Halo 5 doesn't even have HDR. It's cool that the One X is capable of doing 4K and HDR but nothing amazing stands out.

No. The Xbox one x does not support 4k pass thru. I’ve searched online and cannot get a definitive answer. The One s does not for sure.

From one of the sites;

“We've asked Microsoft whether the input will support 4K pass-through, a feature that was missing from the Xbox One S.

I have a Yamaha Dolby Atmos receiver so no issues there.

There are about 28 games available in 4K/HDR now and a total of 65 available or in development.

And whether they are interesting enough to play is of course an individual opinion. Many of yours I disagree with.
