I just got an Xbox, and I was wondering if it's normal to have kind of loud fan noise. I don't really notice it when I'm playing a game, but it seems sort of loud if it's turned on and I'm not playing a game.

    Thanks,

    Brian

It's fairly loud as a norm. Basically like a computer power supply.

Mine is loud as hell, I think the newer ones are supposed to be quieter. On the other hand after all the hours of play it only locked up once on a game.

If it weren't for the fan noise I might have actually considered using it for a DVD player.

I haven't ever noticed fan noise with my Xbox. I may if I listen for it, but it hasn't ever gotten my attention. It was manufactured in late 2003 if that matters.

I have a launch-day XBOX and it's loud as hell when I am playing CERTAIN games (Buffy and MechAssault come to mind)... which is sorta weird [IMG]

I got a launch-day xbox. It's loud, although quieter than most typical PCs.

sometimes the disc drive makes noises too...it's going to die soon...i know it...i just don't want to accept it.

Yea no kidding. I came very close to shelling out ~$70 for another DVD player just so there'd be no fan noise. Too bad I'm a cheap bastid. [IMG]

On the note of using the XBox as a DVD player:
I managed to get my XBox to output DVD movies at 480p and it is not a very good quality player. Since its mostly software and less hardware, there's some serious pixelation. Test it out with Blade, chapter 15 @ 35:21 and look at the yellow wall in the background. My Toshiba SD-5700 is a much better player, and its ranked 40% by Secrets! So, that would put the XBox pretty low in that benchmark in my opinion.

Mark Dubbelboer, if your DVD-ROM dies on you, just replace it with any IDE DVD-ROM for PC. That's the good thing about the XBox, its just like a PC so if something breaks down then you can most likely fix it quite easily.
