The X-files Season 5 is soon to be released on Reg 2 and
now I'm wondering if this would theoretically give me better picture resolution than on the reg.1(NTSC) DVD's.
Is the original master limited to the NTSC resolution?
In that case I could as well buy the Reg 1.
In fact the Pal could actually be worse than the
NTSC because of the NTSC-PAL conversion, right?

Yes they're taken from NTSC masters from what I'm told, and yes, PAL is probably a little worse because of conversion

well it certainly shouldnt look any worse, as modern conversions can look superb and unnoticable picture wise. But of course any "extra" resolution will only be interpolated rather than genuine.

But unless pitch corrected it will suffer from the speed up if its a DEFT conversion.

Actually...from what I've heard...there is no speed up with TV. Only film.

Craig, except that most US TV shows are shot 24fps, so are still subject to speedup

exactly - with the DEFT process the NTSC master has the pull down removed to get back to the 24 frames/48 fields per second and is then sped up to the PAL standard of 50.

This explains why so many US 45 minute episodes clock in at around 43 when DEFT converted to PAL. If you dont "know" about it then to be honest its not a problem. DEFT does give a remarkably good picture and when comparing a DEFT con to an NTSC original its difficult to tell which is which when the sound is down.

I've watched season 1, and have nearly finished season 2 on Region 2 PAL, and I haven't noticed any problems. I guess that unless you do a direct A-B comparison you wouldn't notice.
