I bought an LG two years ago, probably recommended by The Wirecutter. If nothing else, it was much faster at loading discs than the 5-year old blu-ray player it replaced. Hopefully you'll experience something similar.

Unfortunately the Sony BDP-S3500 has one terrible defect: the remote control.
The lack of background light which makes it hard to use when watching something with the lights off and its tiny pause button is essentially impossible to find. Pressing just about anything else (like the stop right next to it) kills the Blu-ray/DVD instantly and you have to restart playing it from the beginning, going all the way through the FBI warnings and other time consuming, annoying things before you can start playing the movie...from the very beginning, and then have to hunt for where exactly you were before, hopefully not either overshooting and seeing something you weren't supposed to yet or rewatching a few scenes...

And, no, Sony does not happen to have an iOS remote app (which should work, considering the fact that the BDP-S3500 can either be connected to your WiFi (in theory anyway, my one attempt didn't work) or you network via Ethernet.

Presumably this gives me incentive to look into what third party universal remotes exist for iOS, but both Sony and The Wirecutter get huge black marks for producing the awful remote (Sony) and not mentioning how awful it is, and how bad the player is because of it (The Wirecutter).

About two weeks to go until the Keynote. Due to business travel I might be able to check in on the announcements during the day, instead of my normal getting the dump that night when I'm home from work.

I'd like to try the Logitech - can you just enter model numbers for devices like my HDTV & receiver and it can load them off its database? So just to use the iOS app this would be the thing to get for Infra-red support, etc: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/harmony-hub

And yes - the live WWDC Keynote stream is by now a permanent feature -- indeed while not live you can get more of less the entire 5 days of WWDC talks -- more or less same day, certainly by the next day. Get the WWDC app, and watch them and/or download them on it.

I went ahead and ordered the Harmony Hub -- it should cover what I need, really my one concern is reliable Infra-Red connectivity to all devices from a stationary Hub. I looked at a scary number of one star reviews on Amazon, but they were all complaining about complicated things failing in the software, etc. My basic play/pause, volume, switch between inputs needs are far from this.

    Yes.

I haven't used the current software -- I still have a Harmony One, which is two generations old. My latest remote had to be URC brand. There's a big Harmony remote thread in the relevant forum. But the software in the past was you added device model numbers and the software suggests "Activities" accordingly. You then fine tune the programming from there.

I was typing a reply in a bouncy NJ Transit train and it got lost...I'll rewrite it later, but thank you Dave, it works and I will be much happier in the future: I can get rid of dedicated remotes.

I'll be in the air, literally, during the Keynote. I'll probably have that evening in a hotel to catch up. :)

This may be the first live event I miss.

I am not really interested in any of the hardware rollouts.

There's no iPhone announcement. I am not interested in any new Mac hardware.

I do have some interest in the Siri assistant, but if it doesn't have a screen like the Amazon Echo Show does, then it's already unuseful to me.

The one thing I am really interested in is a Magic Keyboard for my iMac. If this is a reality, and it copies the Magic Keyboard found on the new Macbook Pros, then consider this an immediate purchase. I already have a DAS KEYBOARD I have been waiting on through Kickstarter, but would request an immediate refund if a Magic Keyboard were introduced.

I will watch the replay on Tuesday. Someone IM me if there is a magic keyboard that is due to immediately go on sale, please.

In line for the WWDC keynote - first time since '13. But meanwhile AltConf is practically in the same building- (lines were next to each other outside-) so if you ever want to join the fun for free, I strongly recommend AltConf
