I faced the same choice and went with the 47" widescreen (Panasonic). If I recall the math correctly, the inscribed 4:3 picture is ~36". I'm very happy with my choice so far.

I too went with the Panny 47" widescreen. Love it, and it really is so much bigger then the 38" tube.
