i found a good price on the unit i want, but its a refurb w/ a 1 yr warranty.
the price is about 25% less than a brand new unit with a 2 yr warranty.

any advice?

how often do recievers crap out after 1 year?

Your must be looking at sticker prices? What I would do is try to make a deal for the new receiver. Once you arrive at a number then see if he'll come down on the by the difference. Otherwise go with the new one or see if he'll through in an extended warranty on the refurb.

its an NAD t 761 from an e-tailer.
price new is $800 (which is the price i'm being quoted by local dealers for their demo models).
price for the refurb is $600.
warranties are thru NAD.

the price the local dealers are giving me on new one is around $1000.
no way i can get the local dealers to come down $200 on their demos.

I bought a couple refurb'd Onkyo TX-DS484's from Ubid.com. Had them for about 2 years and both have worked fine.

They have the T-761 refurb for $599.00
I am willing to bet you can get one for a bit of a deal if you call and haggle a tad.
If they are factory units, they should come with a factory warranty.
I have never had any problem with a refurb unit.

If you're certain that the warranty is through NAD, then you should probably be okay. Is this unit being sold by the same store as the demo untis that you're considering ?

The question in my mind would be: What is the cost of peace of mind ? $200 ?

Good luck with your decision,
Bob
