How wide of a grap can wood filler fill? can it fill a 1/4" gap?

It can, but will take a couple of applications due to shrinking. Larger gaps are better treatd with two part auto body putty. It dries fast, shrinks little.

Another option would be to fill it with more wood. Cut strips just big enough to fit the void and glue them in.
