The Dark Knight, a near-universally acclaimed picture, being nominated would have tainted the Academy? What about Star Wars being nominated in '77? How about winners that haven't stood the test of time?
I love many films from many eras, highbrow, lowbrow, and everything in between, and I would put The Dark Knight up against any other acclaimed picture as my submission as one of the best films ever made. At the least, I don't think it would be out of place on a Top Five From 2008 list.
I think the Dark Knight is fantastic. I'm simply reflecting my feeling of what I believe to be the view of the Academy. I'm not saying these films are not deserving, but more so that they don't have a chance of winning, or even being nominated for Best Picture. Just like horror movies-even the best- very rarely get consideration.
