I streamed Wonder Wheel free from Amazon this afternoon. I had been wanting to see it for several months, but found the time today due to extenuating circumstances with my equipment.

The love triangle thing Woody Allen has milked over and over again during his career, but it still managed to engage my attention and keep me riveted to the very end. Who would have thought Justin Timberlake would emerge as the movie's best performer? Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro and Allen went wild with exaggerated lighting and intense, uber-saturated color throughout the movie as emotions flare in all directions. Definitely on the darkly bittersweet side of Allen's filmography.

I loved the Coney-Island-in-days-gone-by atmosphere in this film, even though only the first half really spends time developing it. I was born on Long Island but never set foot in that park.

Even as a senior, I love amusement parks. Grew up in Westchester and spent many a sultry summer day and evening at Playland in Rye (scenes from BIG were filmed there).Palisades Amusement Park in NJ was another favorite hang-out. Damn, even the tiny little carnivals/fairs that would set up in a parking lot in Mt. Kisco with cheesy kiddie rides was fun. I remain a huge fan of roller coasters and could easily be one of those people who just drives from one park to the next seeking bigger and better ones.

So, WONDER WHEEL, while not vintage Woody, has a special spot in my psyche.

I enjoyed this film far more than expected, and would love to see it in 4K UHD, though I imagine it's a very long shot to ever be released in that format. This is probably the best looking Woody Allen film to date. Sweet and Lowdown might come in second, but it's been a while since watching it.
