In the future, hopefully these altercations and stampedes will involve the use of deadly force. Yay for Darwinism!

[sarcasm]Wal-Mart is anti-union? I'm shocked![/sarcasm]

Man, times sure have changed regarding Apex. Most people here must not recall the legendary Apex AD-600, with the secret You Should Not Be Here menu that allowed region hacks and defeating macrovision. Those babies were selling like mad for $300 each on the market. It was the first readily available hackable player in the US and it was definitely The Thing to Have. Lots of HTF regulars would have trampled anyone to get their hands on it for $29.95.

I have a close friend who is a former Wal-Mart employee, and he confirmed the anti-union pressure the company puts on their employees (or "team members" as WM likes to call them). He said that he had to sit through a rather lengthy video telling him why unions are bad and how WM "discourages" employee unions. He was also told that if he (or anyone else) attempted to form a union, he would be summarily removed from his position and escorted out the door. So, yes, it is true.

I'm not a big fan of "King of the Hill", but it never fails to make me laugh whenever they show "Mega-Lo-Mart" because that's what WM is. A megalomaniacal, predatory company who thrives on the stupidity of society to get away with commercial murder. Screw Wal-Mart.

Hey guys you should be careful about treading into the area of political discussion. I am no fan of Walmart but at least where I live Walmart mainly put out of business the older crappier chain discount stores like Ames and Jamesway. I could be wrong but I think that the Walmart wages are higher than those old stores, though its still no where near great pay. Oh and according to the news it looks like the whole trampelling incident was staged.

Yet another case of today's press running a story before bothering to find out the facts. :rolleyes

I doubt this new discovery will be reported as far and wide as the initial story. It's not as sensational.

There is nothing wrong even if Walmart wants to prevent a union. That will only drive prices up. Furthermore, it becomes very difficult to fire employees who need to be. Also, it makes it more difficult for employees who are exceptional to make more money than the group. Individualism is denied.

P.S. I've been in two different unions before - one of which was the NEA (National Education Association).

The truly sad part is that WalMart works hard at putting their competition out of business.
It's true that Wal Mart relentlessly works to lower their prices (are they supposed to "kinda sorta maybe" compete?). Of course, if they charged the same price, they'd be accused of "collusion", and if they charged higher prices, they'd be accused of "price gouging", so it seems they (and other businesses) are in a permanent "no win" situation with some people. :)

The sad part is that no one attempted to help.
Perhaps they all recognized her.

Oh look, it's Patricia staging another injury. Just step over her, she's ok.

I guess her sister was there to make sure she didn't actually get hurt.

out here in Oregon, there was a pretty big Wal Mart case. If I remember, it made national news, or at least it was major headline regional stuff. Basically, Wal Mart, in addition to pressuring people not to join unions and finding ways to can people who were pushing for unions, got busted for forcing their employees to work overtime WITHOUT PAY. not without overtime pay or for regular pay, but to go off the clock and continue to work, for hours at a time. And it wasn't just one store--it appeared to be an unspoken store policy almost statewide, if not nationwide. Enforced through negative reinforcement, threat of unemployment and other forms of threat by the managers, people would cave in, clock out and continue to work. The people they went after tended to be women, mostly single mothers, if I remember right.

I'm pretty sure it's google-able.

Anyway, funny that it's coming out this woman faked it in like 16 other Wal Marts.

If it turns out to be fact that this "person" faked
these claims to give Wal-Mart a black eye, then it's
a shame that she wasn't trampled to death. Some people
either need attention or are just rotten individuals.

Wal-Mart's rights to exploit, squeeze and generally prevent their employees from improving their standard of living.
Since when did any Wal-Mart prevent any of its' employees from quiting and getting another better paying job?

If you caught last weeks Simpsons there was an even more blatant jab - "Sprawl-Mart." I loved it.

This is the same tired argument that I have heard again and again. A person shouldn't have to quit their job just to seek better wages and benfits. There are probably plenty of long term Wal-Mart employees. Why should they have to quit their job to improve their wages?. They should be able to improve their working and wage conditions at their present job. If you want to quit a job to move into another line of work or another position, fine; however, I do not see why an employee, who has invested time and loyalty to a company, should have to quit to improve their wages and benefits.

I decided to delete the original comments because they were not in keeping with the original intent of the thread. Since you decided to quote the deleted post, I just want to say there are a lot of people making good wages and benefits who like to defend the rights of large companies in preventing employees from improving their wage and benefit standards. Maybe arrogance like that comes from the fact that they think they are immune from the kind of exploitation they are defending. I don't know for sure.

In a decade or two, maybe these very same people will be subjected to the same kind of treatment. I hope they will be satisfied to be exploited and not suddenly be yelling that, "someone oughta form a union!"

This would appear to be a case of the woman who cried wolf once too many times... as she really was trampled and was very seriously injured according to the EMT that worked on her. The woman then spent two days in the local hospital.

Hey George-

My point is that she was trying to get money and/ or
attention that she didn't deserve in the past, and the
world definitely could do without "people" like this.
