This was a great show and has not aired in reruns for a few years where I live. It was one of my favorites as I was growing up. It's a shame it lasted only 4 seasons (1978-1982), but at least we got to see, what I consider to be, the funniest episode ever produced for any show: Turkeys Away. This was the legendary Thanksgiving episode. I even use the hilarious Les Nessman quote from that episode as my signature (read bottom part of my post).

Anyway, are there any plans to bring this show to DVD? I'd love to own this baby.

As far as I know, music rights issues are likely to keep this show unreleased for all time [IMG]

Music rights... aww crap... I didn't even think of that! [IMG] Yeah, I can definitely see a problem there. I guess they can always change the music if they can't get the rights to the original songs, but it would be nice if they can release the show in its original glory.

I'd rather see this not released at all than released without the music. Personally I'd pay a lot more than usual for this show with the original music, and I know others would too, but there just aren't enough of us to make it worthwhile. [IMG]

Anyone know when those recordings will go public domain? [IMG]

This would be the thread where I could mention that the DJ the Johnny Fever character was based on died last month.

With the recent extensions to the copyright act (thank you Di$ney) these songs won't go into the public domain in our lifetimes.

You'd think reasonable people could agree that with no release there is no revenue for anybody, but with a DVD release there would be some money to be made, even if it has to be shared by more parties. But, the missing ingredient here is "reasonable people."

By the way, it's two n's, not two t's -- the city is spelled Cincinnati, not Cincinatti.

Ah... thanks for the correction. Fixed. [IMG]

So, I guess my only chance of owning "WKRP" is to fish out my old VCR and wait until some TV Station decides to air the reruns. Its better than nothing I suppose.

This music rights crap really irritates me. Another show I suspect will never see the light of day because of music rights is Miami Vice. I would think the 20+ year old tunes used in these shows would be grateful to get ANY exposure.

Can you point me to some info on this? How long is copyright anyway? I thought copyright was lifetime + 70 years. I thought that was excessive. You're saying it's now longer?

Music rights is also what kept Grease from being released for years. It was to have been one of Paramount's premiere DVD titles.

This is the one show I always note in the TV MIA threads.

On a slightly off topic note It was funny watching Valley Girl last night and seeing Les Nessman as the driving in structor.

As Venus Flytrap would say "It is time fore more music and less Nessman."
