I'm about to win my Fantasy Football league (basically a 2nd round bye) and the winner gets $450. I've considered an X-Box, and I've considered a new receiver (still in the days of Pro-Logic). But I have a feeling that after a few months the x-box will start collecting dust and the receiver will be obsolete/I want a new one in a few months.
Any ideas? I'm moving to St. Louis in less than a month then moving back to Michigan in less than a year into a brand-new condo. (just something to get your wheels turning [IMG] )

My dumb ass would run out and spend it. But why not just bank it? Never hurts to have extra cash in the bank! [IMG]

Don't think of the receiver being obsolete in a few months... think of it more as a big upgrade from what you currently have. There are two things that you can ALAWYS use that never becomes obsolete... speakers and amplifiers. What speakers do you have? $450 can but some pretty nice speakers. External amplification is always fun. There's always the Adire Audio Rava... best POWERED sub for $400 IMHO. I find it a bit more musical then the SVS, and the 25-31CS does not have amplifications (add at least $100 to the asking price if you do not already have a means of amplifying it).
Personally... I would buy a BUNCH of cigars. The El Rey Del Mundo weekly special at JRcigars is a HELL of a buy at $40 for 20 sticks.

I agree with Steve. With the two moves you mentioned quickly approaching it can't hurt to have some extra money saved "just in case." When you get situated in your condo then take a look at your finances and, if it allows, go for it!

    Just my opinion of course...

Thanks for the suggestions... But the way I look at unexpected money is to buy something I never would have bought with expected money. Something I heard on 60 Minutes II last night - "An ancient Chinese proverb states that if you have $.10, spend a nickel on bread and a nickel on a flower" This is my flower [IMG]
And speakers - I have Energy Take 5's that I bought early in the summer. I haven't been really researching receivers, but I know that some of the high-end ones are coming with upgradeable software (decoder upgradeable), so I'd like to wait for that ability to trickle down to the $500-700 level....

Buy a new reciever and sell your old one. That way you can still have some money. And a new toy/reciever!!

I'd buy a new reciever..the outlaw 1050 jumps to mind at that price. The jump from pro logic to DD and DTS is HUGE and well worth the price. Firmware upgradeable receivers are not going to be available anytime soon...there's simply too much money to be made from making new models rather then offering upgrades to cheaper models. Of even the high end pre amps etc that offer firmware upgrades there haven't been a lot offered other then the odd tweak here or there. More often then not the major hurdle to upgrades is the hardware itself so I guess what I'm saying is buy the best you can now and be happy.

I'm torn.... I had a dream about a digital camera last night, so that may be what's called for. Although an xbox would be pretty cool. So far, I'm the first kid on the block with HDTV, so now I can be the first on the block with an xbox [IMG] Remember being the first on the block with Cable?

Forget saving it, that's no fun! [IMG]
No, you need to blow it on something fun. Really fun. That way anytime you use it, you can always look at it with a gleam in your eye knowing that 2001 Fantasy Football Paid for that sucker.
That said, I'd personally buy an iPod with the wireless adapter ($30) for my car.
If you're not into that, an XBox is a great idea.
Or, if you're a compu-geek like me, you can buy an extra 19" monitor and video card to have a 2 monitor hookup on your computer.
Just be sure to blow it all. [IMG]

If I just won $450 for nothing... I'd do what every other single male would do. Take a few friends to the nudie bar and celebrate with lots of lap dances!!!

About 4-5 years ago - My girlfriend (at the time) and I went into the President Casino there in St. Louis w/ $10 each in Quarters. She walked out with nothing - I walked out with $600.00 cash after hitting the jackpot on the FIREBALL slot machine.

That evening, the St. Louis Blues happened to be hosting the Detroit Red Wings in the 1st or 2nd round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

I purchased 2 tickets (great seats @ Center Ice!!!) for $250 and my girl and I had so much fun that night!!!

We also stayed in a nice hotel that night and went to Six Flags the next day!

I say: Do something w/ the $ that you normally wouldn't do - go have some fun!

It's better to give than to receive, so I'd buy a stamp and an envelope and send the rest to me. [IMG]

If you don't buy a reciever because you are worried about it becoming obsolete, it seems that you would never buy a reciever.

Me, I would buy some Kings hockey tickets.
