Although it didnt due well at the box office, MGM is still giving this film a deluxe treatment. Its coming out in May and will feature a 20 minute extended version of the film, as well as three commentaries, making of features, and a number of historical documentary features as well. No mention of the commentary participants yet or if it will have DTS.

Overkill? No way, looks very loaded and a nice package. I'm getting it, but I'm gonna be BROKE in May: Criterion Antoine Doinel Box, Paul Verhoeven Box, X-Files Season 7, People vs. Larry Flynt SE, Catch Me If You Can, Frida (?), There's Something About Mary SE, 25th Hour, Dances with Wolves SE, and now Windtalkers SE. Phew...

can anybody think of other examples of a box office (not to mention critical) bomb that got such a lavish DVD? i mean this movie didn't even sit especially well with videophiles.

The Reason the release is 3 disc because it did so poorly at the box office and the DVD did pretty well in terms of sales, Now they can get more money out of true collectors and movie lovers, they propably told nick cage and john woo, Here you lost our money, you got to do the commentaries and extra stuff, get our money back, There were few movies that did okay at the theaters but did very well on DVD, even better than theaters, more money, TRAINING DAY being one and K-19 being another example.

All I can say is that $39.98, "that's too [email protected] high!"

Especially in light of LOTR, Pearl Harbor and other special editions.

Oh man, I never would have expected this, considering the box office and critical failure of this film.

I really enjoyed this film and will definitely purchase this. [IMG] [IMG]

I'll buy one (what's Navajo for "I'll buy one" ?), I'm glad I delayed buying the dvd now. I quite enjoyed Windtalkers, good old fashioned WWII blood and guts, no apologies or moralising or anti-war preaching (I think, actually all I remember is explosions, shootings and Cage grunting and grimacing) which makes a refreshing change.

A desperate attempt by MGM to recoup some of the huge bucks lost on this flop.

They can make it a 20-disc deluxe set, it doesn't change the fact that the film was a total stinker.

I held off on the recent release, hoping that there will be a special edition down the line.

Still...with all the bad feedback, I think i'm gonna rent this first and then decide.

Personally, I do think this is overkill. But to each his own, I guess...

I remember when I used to hate MGM. My how times have changed.[IMG]

Here's my hope's for the first disc: those three commentaries are each encoded at 96kb/s, and NO DTS TRACK! Leave room for the video!

I have the R4 special edition and there's little special about it. Obviously, the R1 SE will be far superior, but if the commentaries on the R4 version are any indication this will be a big pass for me. They could cure insomnia (Cage included). That and the fact that the film was OK at best.

I realy won't be buying this release as I have already ordered a copy from France which has two discs and most important has english DTS.

I don't care that much for this 3-disc set as it wasn't a very good movie and the only reason I am buying the French version is because DTS would sound very nice with this movie [IMG]
