I think to boil down the difference, the ME and all 9x OS's use the "386 kernel" ...while Windows 2000 & XP use the "NT kernel".
The 386 kernel lets software access system resources DIRECTLY, and thus is better for gamers.
The NT kernel has a HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) that forces the software to go THROUGH the operating system to get to resources.
I think Rob G. (and others) know more than me, but this kernel difference is why ME and 98 don't handle large amounts of RAM as efficiently as W2K & XP.
