What on earth clouds the minds of people who put wind chimes outside?

My next-door neighbour - a LOUD family at the best of times - has one dangling around. Ding-ding-ding whenever the wind picks up a tad.

Do these people thing they're doing the local community a service or something? I'm tempted to take some super-glue to the bloody thing.

    Agreed.

    They are annoying as hell.

I don't mind overhearing other peoples' music, etc. during the daytime, but the chimes are just grating.

Depending on the tone of the chmes, I find them very soothing.

My mate lives next to someone who has chimes, I swear my eye starts twitching everytime they are going, and the thing is I live in a townhouse and the people in the next flat play drums and it doesn't bother me at all. [IMG]

I'd rather hear the chimes than the damn birds that think they have to sing from dawn to dusk.

What kind of chimes do they have? I agree that some of them can be grating on the nerves. You can get tuned pipes that are actually quite pleasant. Perhaps you can offer to replace them with a quality set that is more to your liking?

These have quite a high "ding" sound so they're probably the cheap-as-crap type.

I guess to each his own because I love hearing the sound of chimes.

I friggin love wind chimes. [IMG] I have a set on the patio by the pool and I love the sound it makes. I'm actually thinking about getting some more. I'm also thinking about getting a set for my bedroom so that when I turn my ceiling fan to high I get wind chimes to soothe me and help me go to sleep.

I hate wind chimes. Several years ago my neighbours had a set of these things and they drove me nuts. It might be a good idea to mention how annoying they are to your neighbours; you could suggest they re-locate them to the other side of their house or get some lower frequency chimes (which are much less annoying). Luckily for me, my neighbours' device was so cheap it fell apart very quickly.

I think a lot of wind chimes are pleasant sounding, but I agree, people have no business hanging wind-chimes if their neighbors are close enough to hear them.

I don't mind a nice sounding windchime, but our next door neighbours have bamboo chimes and they are VERY annoying.

I'll take wind chimes any day over the neighbor who likes to get drunk and play drums or guitar on his backyard porch at midnight.

I'm sure he would rather have wind chimes than a neighbor who mows her yard at 6am.

(No, the two events are not unrelated...)

I would probably be annoyed if he played the drums at night, but its usually during the day [IMG]

I guess this isn't a good time to mention that I have wind chimes[IMG] . Personally I don't mind them s much as the chatty next door neighbor who will talk your ear off all day long, or the drunken hillbilly neighbor with the pick up truck and the trash outside his house.

Result! The neighbour has agreed to take them down at night.

Good job too because I was running a bit low on superglue.

I own many many windchimes. Mine are tuned (J. Standard?) windchimes? Anyhoo, I got them all at a music shop that sells instruments. My house isn't close to anyone though. I have quite a large yard and have a couple sets hanging in the trees. I rarely hear these chimes unless there is a storm or if it is windy and I am outside on the back deck.

Chimes are very soothing to me. Not those cheap glass ones or ones made out of hollow cheap aluminum though.

    Rob, you heartless soul you!
Wind chimes, man, they're cool. I love the sound of the things. Soothing. Makes me wanna grab beer after beer, get drunk, and play an electric guitar at midnight--and mow somebody's lawn at six in the morning! [IMG]
Seriously, though, I love wind chimes. And note the discord here among the current and former HTF moderators. Are we bursting apart at the seams? [IMG]
