Title says it all. With Manuhunt coming out this fall I might have to buy a PS2 again but I'm more interested in the redesigned unit that was just released in Japan.

I'm not too up on the redesign, but I have seen a new PS2 bundle in the stores. It's got the network adapater included in the box. The box also mentions an improved DVD player, so maybe that's the redesign?

Yup, as far as I know, the new network bundle has the new PS2 in it (progressive scan DVD playback, quiter fan, integrated IR port).

Are you referring to the SCPH-50000MB/NH model, which comes with a 40GB HDD (as opposed to the SCPH-50000, released a month earlier and without the HDD)?

Hmmm, either or. I didn't think that the online pack that is available now had the preogressive DVD playback and intergrated IR port. Will the model with a built in HDD be coming here?

Are you talking about the PSX? It's not out yet, sometime this winter in Japan. Sony sounds like they're intending to release it in all territories. But the US doesn't seem like the market for it to sell to even the hardcore types

Hmm... I just picked up a new one as a replacement to my old model. I wonder if I should take it back in the next few weeks and then pick up the new model instead.

I would suggest that anyone thinking of getting a PS2 should wait until the new units are available. A few extra features for the same price, you might as well wait.

...and I saw this over at IGM:
So it may be difficult to tell if you are getting the new version!

I'm just hoping that we'll be able to see the model through the window for the serial number.

The model number should be on the box next to that hole for the serial number. At least that's how my box is from over a year ago.

So what is the exact model number we should be looking for so we know that it's an updated PS2?

    It should be SPCH-50001.

I'm going to hit Best Buy either today or tomorrow to see if they have any of the new ones in stock. You'll be able to recognize me as the guy who is picking up one PS2 after another looking for a model number. [IMG]

They are indeed being shipped to retailers. I saw some today at (2) EB's in my area. I plan to purchase one later in the week. I got a tip from the guys at the IGN boards. The box for the new units are easily distinguished by the triangular yellow sticker in the corner of the box the + sign on it. There is also a bunch of small white text on the front of the new box and it states somewhere in the test "progressive scan". The new model number is as stated above. Good hunting.

"Doesn't this redesign lose the i-Link port?"

    Yes.

"Is that important? How many games used it and how?"

I don't think so. I don't know of any game or accessory off hand that used it.

"I don't think so. I don't know of any game or accessory off hand that used it."

Grand Turismo did, my friends and I had three PS2's hooked up this way at one time....

However, the i-Link will become useless because all network gaming will be done by the....network adapter[IMG]
I assume GT4 will be released this way...

I did see these units at my local BestBuy - look for "progressive scan" in the small text - happy hunting!
