Welcome to the forum Larry!
For the record, Heavenly Creatures is already out:
Although it's a Canadian exclusive, it's still a R1 release and can play fine in US DVD players. The catch though is that the disc is Pan & Scan only.
And to be honest, I don't think we'll be getting a SE anytime soon. Peter Jackson is tied up with the Lord of the Rings trilogy for at least another year-and-a-half, and he probably won't be able to give HC his full attention for awhile.
It really depends on how badly you want it.
EDIT: Oh yeah, that price quoted is in Canadian dollars (duh! ); when converted to US currency, that'll translate into about 11 dollars.
Hey thanks alot for the information! Just wondering if anyone knew if this is the same as the VHS version, the theatrical release. thanks!
I'm not sure which was shown theatrically, but the Canadian DVD is the shorter version.
I do believe that this was announced as an upcoming title from Mirimax a while ago.
However, I doubt it will be an SE (we couldn't even get a real SE of Bad Taste because of LOTR) and I am very concerned about which cut will be used. The longest cut was only seen in New Zealand, the next longest cut was seen in Britain, with the shortest cut seen in the US.
I read a story at DVD File, I think, that mentioned that a release of Heavenly Creatures would be headed for stores sometime in 2002. Let's hope this is not the same Canadian release that is available now. That release is pan 'n' scan and has no extra features.
The original cut in the movie, seen in New Zealand, I believe, has somewhere around 11 additional minutes compared to the R1 DVD available now. There was no word in the story about whether this additional footage would be available in the new DVD. I sincerely hope that it is safe to assume that, at a minimum, we can expect an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the R1 cut, though it would be very nice to have the additional footage available as well.
Oh, and to answer your question, yes the Canadian DVD is identical to the VHS version.
I would take an OAR, anamorphic version right now. Peter Jackson wouldn't even need to be present to have that released.
I believe the OAR is 2:35, BTW. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Has the widescreen full length cut been released anywhere? Region 4?
I do not believe it has, but I do know the original cut was what premiered in NZ at the movies.

There's also an anamorphic R2 DVD in France (subtitles can only be turned off with modified players though), and it's the shorter version. Still, it's the best DVd of HC at this point.
