I think I'm going to upgrade from the Onkyo 595 (no-preouts) to the 696 so that in a year or so, I can add the new Outlaw 950 pre/pro to increase my power?
Will I be able to do this or am I just a dumb, know nothing newbie?
Will these two products be compatible?
Thanks.

Your close but just a little off...
If you plan to use the pre-outs of your receiver, the component you would need to complete the system would be an external amplifier like the Outlaw 750 or upcomming 770, not a pre/pro like the 950 (your receiver becomes the pre/pro in this config.). However, if your receiver has 6 channel analog inputs, you could connect the Outlaw 950 through that means as a pre/pro and your receiver would simply be the source of amplification.
Bottom line: the direction of signal is from a pre/pro, out the analog outputs (or pre-outs on your receiver), into an external amplifier (or a receiver's 6 channel analog inputs).
Separates 101 :)
