I sure hope so. In my opinion, it surely deserves a nomination. But, given the fact that this was a fairly small release, and it came out so early in the year, what are the chances that the Academy will actually nominate this film for Best Picture?

Chances? Depends how many Julia Roberts films came out this year... Or how much cash Miramax is prepared to splash out on their advertising. [IMG]
But really, what does it matter to you or me? Memento is a brilliant film, with or without an Oscar nomination.

Just wait until all those December films show up just for Oscar consideration, and they'll be "fresh" on the minds of the academy, and Memento will face a tougher road to getting a nomination due to timing.

The film didn't gross enough and was too early in the year to get serious consideration in the big Oscar category. But it could get a screenplay nod since the writers tend to nominate more on (gasp) quality than boxoffice.
"Memento" could show up among the critics awards, however. The National Society of Film Critics often picks a film that they feel has been overlooked, and some of the regional associations like the LA critics sometimes pick less commercial choices (remember "Brazil").

I wish, but we all know it won't. Those awards are only for the great movies such as Legally Blonde and Freddy Got Fingered! [IMG]

    I hope so.
However, I can guarantee that "The Shipping News" will be nominated. It only makes sense: "The Cider House Rules", "Chocolat", ... [IMG]

If the Oscar nominations were announced tomorrow, Memento would definitely earn a nod. Hopefully this fantastic film will still be remembered by the Academy once the December "Love me, I'm classy" Movie Parade draws to an end.

Not a chance. At this point, I think that lesser films like AI, Moulin Rouge and maybe even Shrek have a better shot at a Best Picture nod than Memento.

No idea, but I would hope the film, Nolan, his screenplay, the editing, and Guy Pearce to be awarded.

we are talking about the same guys that gave Shakesphere in Love and Titanic, Best Picture here [IMG]
I see Memento being similar to Traffic in the Academy Awards this year... it will get some statues, but I don't think they will get the nod for Best Picture [IMG]
...but hopefully I am wrong and they win it ALL!

I think this one is gonna buck the Academy system. We know the Academy tends to play it safe and all but ignores independent films, but this time...I think we got a contender here.
