Will dvd recorders record dolby soundtrack

    If the recorder had a digital input, would it record the dolby digital sound from an ota stb or satellite receiver?

    There was a Philips model that was supposed to record 5.1 but nobody has ever seen one. Other than that, I think they are all pretty much limited to two channel recording.

    It would seem that the cost of an AC3 encoder license is rather extreme ($100 per machine is the figure I've heard). This would drive the cost of the machine up considerably. To avoid those fees would require recording without processing the AC3 stream at all (I think) , like an HDTV recording of the entire transport stream as a whole and only decoding on playback. I doubt that we will see this feature in reasonably priced machines until the cost of encoder licenses drop to match decoder prices.
