I think I know the answer, but wanted to make sure ... will a Blu-Ray DVD play on a standard non-blu-ray player? I'm thinking there is too much information for the non blu-ray players to output.

Will be getting a Blu-Ray player soon, but am some great deals on some Blu-Ray disc today and was thinking on taking advantage of them?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info on the other thread, (duplicate - sorry about that), but since the thread was closed before I could post a response I thought I'd respond in the this post. That's pretty much what I thought.

Michael thanks for the info ... also did you delete Cees reponse because it said the Blu-Ray disc would play on a standard player?

Sal,

No, I removed it myself, because it was the answer to a question you didn't pose.

Cees,

Thanks ... like I said I didn't think the disc would play on a standard player, but thought I'd ask just to make sure. Now I'm trying to figure out which Blu-Ray player to get that I can use with my TV, (which is not HD). Thanks again.

Personally, I'm very happy with the Panasonic DMP-BD50, which is now replaced by the -BD55. Have a look at that one.

Any one will do so. I have my PS3 hooked up to a standard TV in the kids' playroom so I can put on a movie for them w/o having to fire up the HT. My friend has one hooked up to his standard TV (his son games with it, he watches movies--some day he'll go HD with his display, but he's not in a big rush).

A Blu-ray disc will only work in a Blu-ray player.

However, you do not need an HD television set to use a Blu-ray player. You won't be able to take advantage of the full quality of the HD resolution, but if you're someone like me who doesn't have the money to purchase a really nice HD set but wanted to start enjoying some of the new features with Blu-ray, you can certainly pick up a Blu-ray player now. Then, if you decide to get an HDTV in the future, you won't have to worry about getting one then.

For what it's worth, I've been very happy with my new Sony BDP-350, which I bought in October for around $300. I've seen it now on Amazon.com and some other retailers for a lot closer to $200. I figured I'd end up with an HDTV within the next couple years and it was kinda silly to be buying new DVDs that I'd want to rebuy on Blu-ray anyhow, so buying a Blu-ray player in advance of an HDTV was my way of future-proofing myself. I think it was absolutely worth it. And even though my 480p projector isn't HD, I still see a very noticeable improvement in quality watching "Casino Royale" on Blu-ray vs. watching it on DVD.

Hope this helps!

I got an HD-DVD player when they were being cleared out because I wanted one, but I still don't have an HDTV yet. Right now it's in a kitchen cabinet waiting for the day I bring home the new TV and receiver, but when I got it I tried it out on the old TV just to make sure it worked. It only has a regular video output, no S-Video, the HD discs still looked pretty nice but a lot of the menus were unreadable. Hoping it won't be TOO much longer before I finally upgrade the TV.

Hey, thanks for the info ... I'm definitely gonna get the Blu-Ray player next, then the HD set down the road ... I agree, I really don't want to purchase DVD's in standard format only to decide to bet them in Blu-Ray later ...
