Is there a link between the more and more widescreen commercials being shown and produced and the 16x9 TV? If so then wouldn't people be calling up the product and its production studio and complaining about the black bars on their TVs while watching commercials????

I don't think it has anything to do with 16x9 TVs. It's just kind of stylish at this point.

It actually started quite awhile back durring the Laser Disc era, you might just notice it more now that you have a DVD Player and get to see your movies in WS.

I started to notice it back in the early 90s.

Note that while movie commercials are now (for the most part) done in widescreen, they're usually cropped to 1.78:1, if they're 2.4:1. FOTR is especially guilty of this... judging by the commercials, trailers, press photos, you'd never know it was a scope film.
