Why would a DVD not play? (1 Viewer)

I just got my wedding video back from my videographer and it won't play in my main dvd player. It just says "reading" and stays there. I have a JVC progressive scan player. It does, however, work in my other DVD player (Phillips), which is much older. I tried it at my parents house and got the same thing, it worked in their older DVD player but not in a newer machine. Why is this and what can I do to get it to play in newer machines? Thanks for the help...

Ask your videographer what DVD format was used. It was probably either DVD+R or DVD-R, which are the two common writeable formats. If I had to guess, I'd say +R, because that's a Phillips format.

Some players simply aren't compatible with one or both formats. It's not an uncommon problem. During the last Oscar season, Academy screeners were sent out on DVD-R, and some voters couldn't play them.
