I have the Star Wars Definitive Edition LD box set that I got 4 or 5 years ago. It’s the box set that had the book “creative impulse” in it and of course contains the original movies with some interviews. On side one and part of side two I get very bad color bars as you can see in the picture. What is this? Was this in their master? Is there anyone else with this problem? How could THX let something like this pass by them? Is it possible that only my LD is bad? Thanks.

Have those bars always been there, or did they just now appear?
Do they move? If so, this might be a manifestation of a problem that showed up in the original pressing of the "Definitive Edition" known as the "rolling bar" problem.

No they don't move. However it looks a little better on TV. I did a capture to post this pic and some how my capture card shows this problem more exaggerated than if you see it directly on TV. Yes I think they have always been there. You mean that an LD could go bad like this over time?

Yes I remember those reports. If I remember correctly, those problems were some kind of "bright" bars moving up and down.

In my almost twenty years of collecting LDs (including a couple copies of this box set), I have never seen this problem. I have no opinion as to the cause. My suggestion is to find another player and display. Check your connections at the player, processor and display points. Change your connections. If you switch through a processor, try a straight connection. It might be interesting if you can locate another copy of this box set to play on your system. One way or the other, you will determine if it's a disc, player, display or connection problem.
The only thing I can think of is that LD players do some internal video processing - something might be faulty with this card.

Does this effect happen with any other CAV format LDs? This looks strikingly similar to an effect when my old DVL-700 started to go severly out of alignment. Do you get frames skipping at random? (another symptom).
My copy of the Definitive set is one of the later pressings, so I have yet to see any problems such as this from it.

You have not told us what you are watching on. TV, Projector, doubler or HTPC. If you can do a grab, I would say HTPC. I would then say "early version of dtv - Dscaler". Am I right? Maybe.
If so, you need to look at your hardware. Laserrot does not look like the image you have posted.

    Sam,
If you post some frame numbers so I can check my copy.

Philip, I'm not sure what you mean by frame numbers or why is it needed. The scene is on side one. Near the end of it and it's the famous dinner or lunch scene! I don't have this problem on a particular frame, it's the entire side 1 and to a lesser degree, side two. These color bars are visible on the red tones as you can see in the below picture. You do not see them on the other colors.

No, I don't get frame skipping

I don't think that this is important. I see it on my widescreen TV and it's not the TV because as you can see I grabbed these scenes directly from my LD player into my computer without anything in-between. It's not my LD player because I have other LDs including TPM with Tatooine scenes which look good.

We assume that Star Wars is your only CAV disc to do this.
TPM is CLV on all sides which may not exhibit the same problem since tracking is done differently between the two formats. That's what we are trying to figure out. A CLV disc is not the same as a CAV disc, so you can't compare the two for problem eliminations.
You also haven't told us if your LD player is run through your computer card first then from the computer to the TV set or if your LD is usually hooked straight to the TV and you unhooked the LD from the TV and re-hooked up to the computer separately. That's what others are trying to figure out.
BTW, I've watched mine many times over the years and I haven't come across this. It's an early set too, but without the "rolling bars" problem.

    That does look curious.
Another reason why we simply MUST have an Episode IV DVD release!
SW fans are starting to turn to the dark side, due to lack of SW DVDs!! And, believe me, that's NOT a pretty sight!

I checked that scene from my Definitive Collection last night after reading this. My disc doesn't not exhibit that problem. I purchased the DC box set the second day it came out. I don't know what that is Sam.
