Why isn't "Once Were Warriors" on DVD (1 Viewer)

I watched an excellent presentation of it on IFC. There's a show called Talking through the movie that is essentially the movie with a dialog track running over the films regular audio, just like a DVD. Since Temuera Morrison has quite a bit of exposure over here and there's already a commentary track recorded (and it's a good one) I'm quite surprised to find that I cant get the movie on DVD.

Is there an expected release date? Is there any explination at all?

I ran a search and didn't find anything but maybe it was discussed a long time ago, huh.

I don't know why it is not available in the US. But it is available in Australia. The DVD is PAL and region 4.
I don't own it so I cannot offer up a review.
Good Luck,

There's also a Canadian exclusive release from Seville Pictures. You can pick it up at Link Removed
I have a copy but haven't had a chance to watch it.

There was also a sequel that I believe was only shown at film festivals in the US, so I haven't seen it. It's also available on R4 DVD, I believe as a 2-pack with the original.

Yeah the sequel was called "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" and in my opinion was a very average sequel to a great film that should be viewed if you haven't seen it yet. I don't own Once Were Warriors on DVD and I haven't rented it for a long time so I can't give you a brief review because it has been so long.

I have the double pack with both movies on DVD.
I have to agree with Nick re "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" although I have to admit there were a few more funny scenes in the sequel. BTW both have alot of violence, the sound tracks are both good although both suffer a little lip sync problems towards the end.
Other than that I am happy to have them in my collection and have watched both several times.
There are plenty of places to get these from but if interested you can try:

I am sure they export.

Richard.

My apologies for duplicating the EZYDVD site I should have checked Chauncey's link.

If it makes you all feel good there are at least 2 Australian based movies not available in Australia, but released on DVD in the US. These being "The Castle", & "The Man from Snowy River"

Please post when you can if the disc is anamorphic or not. The back of the case doesn't seem to indicate that it is. Thanks.

The Canadian Seville disc is 1:66:1 NON-anamorphic. I thought the transfer was terrible. I actually think i remember renting the criterion laser years ago and it looked better. None of the features from the Criterion laser are on the disc.

I don't know what it is with New Line Home Video and the older Fine Line titles (trust me, I've asked). I would have thought releasing "Proof" would be a natural after "Gladiator's" success and now that Temuera Morrison is Jango Fett, that "Once Were Warriors" would get a release. I'd love to see "Waterland" as well. At least "Legend of 1900" has been issued on DVD— by Image.

Trust me, I'm kicking myself for not picking up the Criterion LD when I saw it used at Amoeba Hollywood a few months back.

I'd love to see the sequel as well— any plans for a US release, even straight-to-IFC/Sundance/cable?
