Why did the US R1 NTSC open matte
version of "The Commitments" go OOP?
Is it for a planned WS version?

I dunno. It IS out of print, and it's a Fox item released Nov. 1999, so it's been out not quite 3 years. And it's still officially SRP'ed at $29.99, from what I can see...so instead of lowering the price and selling it off, they discontinued it.

I think I smell an expired liscense or something like that here...

I'm pretty sure it's p&s, not open matte. It even says pan & scan on the box (which is why I returned it).

I was so looking forward to watching this movie again last night. I haven't seen it since I got my Toshiba widescreen last year.
Imagine my horror when I saw it wasn't widesreen [IMG] Damn, this is one of my all time favorite movies. Needless to say, I watched something else instead. In went Almost Famous.
I had this since it was released but had a 32" tv at the time. Even then I always bought the widescreen versions of movies but this must have been the only version available.
If this is out of print, it MUST be brought back OAR!

I'll second Curtis' recommendation - and add a vote for a better transfer!

There is a decent R2 anamorphic widescreen release from MGM

I had read someone, can't remember where now, that it was coming to R1 again this year. Off to search for it again...

Mark, that would be great news, let us know what you find.
I'm doing a little search myself to see what it would take to mod my JVC XV-FA90 to play region 2. It looks like the release Bjorn mentioned also has a 5.1 soundtrack [IMG]
