I didn't really notice this until watching a movie on my friends RPTV. We own a 1997 Sony 53" RPTV and recently I've noticed it is dark on the outside and bright in the center. What's the deal?

Well, whenever lenses are involved, there is something called light falloff. This simply means that due to the nature of lenses (and apertures), the greatest amount of light transmission is at the centre of the image area. As you move out from the centre to the edges, there will be less light. Depending on how severe the light falloff is, there may be a problem with the lens, but note that light falloff is normal.
