Why is Doctor Zhivago cropped so tightly?

    I compared the dvd of DZ to the vhs 30th anniversary copy and the dvd is missing SIGNIFICANT picture info on the left side. The dvd frame looks larger than the previous release as well. The right hand side of the frame is identical on both releases. I was shocked at how much is missing from the left...around 25%.

    I wouldn't assume that the "more picture" on the left means that one is correct.
    I know that the old LD of Manhattan (also a Panavision film) showed more than it should have on the left, yielding something like a 2.55:1 AR when it should have been around 2.40:1.
    It's probably a safe bet that the DVD is more likely framed correctly than the old VHS.

    It's likely that the LD used a full apature source for the picture.

    The DVD is the correct version because that far side would have been masked by the soundtrack. You'll notice how off-center the LD image, which further shows the oddity.
