For one thing, there are only so many hours in a day. If you write a good review it's almost certainly a long review so your possible reader will probably 'skip to the end' and see what overall rating you give the movie and this may spark their interest to actually go over the whole piece to see why your rating is not what they were expecting.
If it *is* what they expect they probably won't read it. Without stars there is probably a greater chance they won't read it at all.
Another reason is that in the course of a long review you may give many different views and at the end you need a summation that makes pretty universal sense. Stars mean something to people all over so if your English isn't so good you can at least get a final idea of what the reviewer was trying to say.
My feelings, anyhow.
Yeah, Andrew, do you still give 12 Monkeys a 1 star for Bruce?
