Why doesn't my Win Media Player play avi files? (1 Viewer)

I tried downloading some video files over the net, and they were in avi format, yet the newest version of Windows Media Player won't allow be to play it. I get a message like: "Unable to compress file"

Has this happened to anybody else?

They're probably compressed with a codec(a program that allows you to watch/view a specific kind of audio or video) you don't have on your machine. Do a search on the net for DiVX, I bet they're compressed with that

Yea, mostly all avi files nowadays are encoded with DiVX. Glad to see that you were able to get it working.

Yeah, I had the same problem a little while ago. Downloading the newest DiVX codecs fixed it immediately.
