Why does WinXP insist in adding CD drives that don't exist?

For some reason, my Windows XP is adding
two additional CD/DVD drives to my system
    that don't exist.

I go into CONTROL PANEL - > SYSTEMS -> DEVICE
MANAGER and remove the drives. However, days
    later, the drives reappear.

Any reason why this is happening and additionaly,
any way of preventing this from happening again?

    Thanks in advance.

I have never seen this problem on any of my XP computers. Perhaps you have multiple device drivers for the same drive? Have you replaced the drive on the computer at any time in the past?

Ron, do you have CD-burning software installed? Some of them install their own virtual drives to allow you to emulate copy-protected CDs and to use CD images on the hard drive to give you hard drive speed.

There is one specific cd burning program i used to have that created a virtual cd device. I cannot remember the name of it now, but it was a popular one.

Nero has a virtual drive with "Nero ImageDrive", and I think CloneCD also has a virtual drive. If you have either installed, that may be the issue.

Another common virtual drive program would be Daemon Tools, but that is a stand-alone program, and it would be unlikely that you could accidentally install it.

It adds a phony floppy drive on my system so I'm not surprised at this.
