I've always wonderd this, but after hearing an update on the sports teams, it came back to mind.
The Yankees have always been doing good, if not one of the best damn sports team in the country. But, that being the case, why do they have the Mets as well? I don't mind 'em, I always root for the underdog, but I just don't see a need for one state to have two sports franchises...Both in Football and Baseball. Always wondered if there was a reason behind this one...
That being said, why dosn't New Jersey have a baseball team? Or a Football team for that matter? We seem to do pretty good in the Hockey Area, even Basketball, maby we should step into these other feilds as well? Either that, or buy the Jets since they play in our state anyway [IMG]...

It's not one state; it's one city. Here in Buffalo I haven't noticed too many people caring particularly for either one.

And it used to be 3 -- the Dodgers used to be the Brooklyn Dodgers.

It's a matter of who can support them team(s). While NY could probably add a third team, cities like Montreal and Pittsburgh have trouble with one.

Because there's enough of an audience to support two teams. Heck, there are some who think that the best answer to baseball's "competitive balance problem" (I don't think it's as prevelent or negative as some, but that's a discussion for another thread) is to put more teams in and around New York, theoretically diluting the massive revenue advantage the Yankees (and, to a lesser extent, the Mets) have over the other teams in the league(*).

As to why MLB put the Mets in NYC as opposed to, say, Denver in the early 1960s, expansion franchises are more or less auctioned off, both in terms of high bidder and putting together a viable business plan. Apparently, the Mets' was one of the two best for that round of expansion.

Chicago has two baseball teams as well. And St. Louis used to have two teams -- the Cardinals and the Browns, who moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles. In 1944, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the St. Louis Browns in 'Streetcat Series' World Series. It was the only World Series ever played entirely in one stadium.

Actually we have 2 MLB teams(mets and yanks) , but we also have the Brooklyn Cyclones(mets) and Staten Island Yankees which are both minor league teams in the city. Those games even get sold out. NYC is a big city, plus you have long island as well which has The Long Island Ducks Minor league team. Also NJ dosnt have a baseball team so you have fans from over there as well.

Talking about baseball teams in states. Look at california. Dodgers, Giants, A's, Angels, San Diego. They have 5 teams in 1 state

Because the Giants & Dodgers moved!

They now 'only' have one team in NL.
    And 'only' one in AL.

Boston used to have two teams. But the Red Sox had all the fans so the Braves moved to Milwaukee.

At least New York can easily support two teams. Some cities can't support one. Nothing personal for those in the smaller cities, but it is the truth.

as a contrast, London has at least 10 professional football (soccer) teams, if not 12 (can't remember all of them). presently 6 of them are in the Premier League, (the top tier). obviously there's enough support to sustain that many clubs. go figure. [IMG]

I've been wondering why Los Angeles can't support even one professional football team?
