A few years ago, I went to a theater showing the director's cut of Blade Runner. Much to my unpleasant surprise, they were showing it in 1.85, when I knew for a fact the movie was 2.35. I complained to the manager, specifically using the words "aspect ratio." He rudely replied "What the heck is that?" Even when I attempted to explain, he still could not grasp the validity of my complaint.
I've also learned to try to avoid cinemas at all costs on weekend nights. It never fails to have at least one group of noisy teens who constantly laugh, chit chat, and even talk on their cell phones! This most recently happened to me with The Others and Jeepers Creepers. I've even had theater managers tell me "you have to expect that with that kind of movie." Whatever. You mean, they don't throw people out anymore?

Why do theater managers.......
-Never close the theater doors when a movie is playing, so we have to hear the outside.
-Give you incorrect answers or dumbfounded stares to questions that they should immediately know the answers to.
-Say things like "The only way the film can't have a digital soundtrack is if there is no digital soundtrack printed on the film" in response to "Now, you guys will remember to actually play the DTS track by inserting the DTS discs into the CD-ROM machine instead of forgetting or just putting in the first disc every damn time?"
-Think that as soon as the frameline disappears on a 1.85:1 matted projection, it's properly framed. "Oh, the reason that there's so much headroom/footroom and there's so many boommikes/dolly tracks is because the filmmakers didn't shoot it right."
-Say "Hey, I'm not a manger! I'm a supervisor!"
Chris knows EXACTLY who I am talking about. But we'll just leave the guy's name out of this.

dude I was a projectionist for over two years in a theatre. managers suck. they're just pissed off they have a shitty job and make 20k a year.

Really, this pretty much sums it up. A coworker of mine dated the manager of a local 8 plex. She (the manager) didn't know a thing about movies. They're basically just babysitters, their only real job being to keep the employees in line and collect money. They usually have zero knowledge about anything relating to the movies. They sometimes know how to thread the projector, but that's about it.
Basically, theaters nowadays are run like fast food chains. It's a bunch of teenagers and 20 somethings working at a job none of them like. Having zero pride in your work is why you get ketchup on your burger when you specifically requested it be left off, and why cellular phones, talking, etc is tolerated, even permitted in a theater. There aren't enough employees to do a thing about it, the employees that are there really could care less. The occasional employee who does care won't do anything about it for a variety of reasons, only one of which is that the theaters rarely have procedures for handling these sorts of things. If the 17 year old employee confronts a 40 something customer, most of the time you can bet the employee will simply lose his job. The customer will make it look like he did nothing wrong and the kid was out of line, and who is the theater manager going to believe?
I just quit going to movies alltogether. On a rare occasion a buddy and I will get off work an hour early in the middle of the week and see something when nobody else is in the theater, but for the most part, I just wait for the DVD...

pretty much. I worked for carmike cinemas as a projectionist for a bit over 2 years, I started at 5.15 an hour, and I left at 5.15 an hour. The job sucks, NO one gets paid anything. The manager knew a bit about film and a fair bit about projectors, but for the most part my training involded "here's a splicer, here's how to thread a film, here's the schedule" and I figured out how to build up and take down films and fix broken projectors myself (actually the projectors ran great as long as there was oil in them, usually I'm the one that checked.. it was always the lamphouses and rectifiers that broke down) the assistant managers for the most part didn't know how to run a film, and didn't care about ANYTHING. the whole atmosphere just makes you want to work hard enough to not get yelled at, but no one ever really did anyway.. I would NEVER work in a theatre again, it was the most miserable job I've ever had (that includes telephone tech support for a large computer manufacturor)
the vendors and cashiers get so tired of being treated like shit by the customers and their employer that they start to enjoy pissing off customers. There were a lot of nights I didn't care either.
