Why do SUVs have a rear windshield wiper?

It seems as though all SUVs have one but no cars do (I think I saw one on an older Acura Integra, but that's about it.) Is there a reason for this? Aesthetics? There certainly doesn't seem to be a functional reason why it would be on one but not the other. (I don't think they should be added to cars -- I think they should be removed from SUVs.) If anything, the more vertical rear windshields of SUVs would allow rain and snow to fall off faster than on cars.
    What gives?

The back window on SUVs, wagons and some hatchbacks aren't "shielded" by a trunk so they get road splatter from the tires. Thus the window gets dirty quick and the wiper/washer comes in real handy.

Regular cars (sedans) don't get road splatter on the back window, so they don't need the wiper.

Some cars do. I remember several station wagons that had one, can't remember the exact model. They're there, originally, for off road use when the window got dirty. Now I believe they are a mandatory thing simply because they are SUV's. Like, how many cell phone talking women actually take their $40,000 SUV off road? (Except accidentally when on the phone perhaps). [IMG]
OK. Men also seem to think SUV's are phone booths as well!

I think also that the rear window on SUV's is angled too much for the dirt/water to be blown off by the wind when the car moves, but the angle of the rear window on a regular car lets this happen.

All the station wagons I've seen also have rear wipers.

My Celica has a rear wiper. Comes in really handy after it's been raining or there is a heavy dew and I need to back up.

Many cars with drastically sloping rear windows (hatchbacks, mostly) have rear wipers because the closer-to-horizontal slant of the window allows more rain to strike the window when the car is moving at speed along the road. Most cars with closer-to-vertical rear windows don't have this problem.

My 1988 Honda CRX has a rear wiper, and I'm very glad it does. Putting a rear wiper on a Del Sol, however, would be pointless.

Seems like hatchbacks, wagons, minivans and SUVs have 'em, and anything with a trunk doesn't.

My Acura RSX has one, but I've only used it once or twice.

The "station wagon effect" of the shape of vehicles such as SUVs actually draws the rain forward onto the window when moving.

Anything with a rather abrupt rear end (like SUVs, vans, wagons) creates more turbulence when driving at speed than a sedan or coupe. This trubulence causes the road spray (water or even dust) to be blown up against the rear window, making a wiper a necessity.
Below is a really crude drawing demonstrating this trubulence.

Yep. My Ford Focus hatchback has a rear wiper, and I use it all the time.
And being "against" rear wipers? Dude, you need to find another cause... [IMG]

My Jeep Cherokee (see Jared_B's top car) had one. The rear window was the dirtiest window of them all.

I really like having a rear windshield wiper on my car. There's nothing worse than being on the highway during a downpour and not being able to see out the back. It also makes backing up safer. This will be an option on any new car I buy.

Brian, just be lucky yours worked before it got ripped off! I've got a 95 Grand Cherokee myself and my rear wiper works sporadically at best, and MANY other people have had similar problems with theirs.

My Rav4 has a rear-window-wiper and I use it all the time... I get a heavy dew every morning that I need to wipe off to back out [IMG]
