I routinely press the Display button on my DVD remote to show the total time and time remaining. On some discs this information is not available. It usually only happens with featurettes.
Can someone explain why some discs don't provide this information?

It's an authoring decision. They left out the timecode.

I was watching Pioneer's original release of "La Femme Nikita" the other night and noticed that it doesn't have timecode or even chapters.

Is the timecode something that's difficult to implement? I really hate it when it's not there, but it tends to be left off a lot of suppliments.

You would think timecode would be easy and a given.

Apparently it's done by sending pulses to the player in some fashion or another, and some data structures don't like some players. I don't QUITE understand how it;s supposed to work, but it sounds like it's a total kluge

All of my single layer cheap HK movies don't have time codes. But they have chapters! I don't really understand that since if I do a chapter skip the player will just display what Chapter it is on but no timecode.

i really do like timecodes on my dvds
