Why do 4x3 HDTV sets display 16x9 DVDs fine but not 16x9 GAMES?

How come 4x3 HDTV sets can anamorphically squeeze DVDs but still not display games correctly when you set them to "widescreen" in options? This is the only reason holding me back from getting a 4x3 set because some games will go widescreen but it isn't displaying them correctly?

I haven't had any trouble with this on my VVega KV-36FS12.

Because the signal from the games does not contain the "Hello, I'm 16:9 anamorphic" flag telling the TV to switch modes

Does Enclave (Xbox) work? That would be a good test, as it accurately flips the tv between 16:9 and 4:3 modes.
