Why are direct view TV's so expensive compeared to RP?

    I am guessing that it costs more due to the tube but It puzzles me that a 34" direct view 16:9 HDTV can cost nearly the same as a much larger RP HDTV. why would anyone really buy those smaller direct views unless they have space issues in their room. I know the direct view suposedly has a better picture but is it really that much better?

    The images are brighter and they are perceived to be sharper. (Note that sharper does not mean more detail).

    Better viewing angles ...

    It might also be in part because of material costs: the CRT for the direct view is large, and likely expensive. That much glass is fairly expensive, I think.
