DTS-ES and THX-EX have back channel. So, receivers like Denon 3801 supports 7.1 with 2 speakers in the back. However, the both back speakers have the same sound. Then, why bother to have 2 speakers making same sound instead of 1 back center speaker?

Don't hold me to this but..... I think the provision for two surround back speakers if for room size purposes. If have a small to mid size room for your home theater, then you are ok with using just the one surround back speaker. For those with fairly large room, then the two surround backs set up would help in the sonic image coming from behind. Just a guess.

yea 7.1 whats the point. Any good matching good setup 5.1 can be just as good as 7.1. These companies are trying to hard. Sooner or latter they will come out with a 20.1 surround sound sytem. Please stop wasting your money!!!!

To sell you more speakers, and get people with receivers to buy this year's model.
It is also makes those of us with software upgradable preamps "bitchy" while we wait for our respective companies to release the upgrades.

It was not equipment manufacturers that pushed this, but sound designers looking for more control of the surround soundfiled then that afforded by only two channels.

My room is 27' x 12' with three rows of seating, so a 7.1 setup is not a waste of money for the cheap seats. Both surround channels are identicle though so it seems you could get by with just one rear speaker, although it may not be optimal.

I'm happy I added the two extra speakers, I think it made a lot of difference. In some sound tracks you can realy notice the 360* coverage. The key is to not spend a ton of money, I used a less expensive speaker for the rear center, it is mainly used only for sound effects.

Where do you place the 7 speakers?
is it like this: (X=speaker)
TV
X Sofa X
X X
or this:
TV
Sofa
XX XX
or am i just way off? i think an 8.1 setup would be optimal, ex:
TV
X Sofa X

Your rear center should go in the center of your two rears slightly back if you like, angle them down slightly so it does not interfer with the front center. If you are using two speakers, I would not have a two large of space between then, they should be close together, depending on the distance apart your rears are.

some5.1 recordings do better with side firing ( wide dispersion )surrounds, while others work better w/direct radiating rear surrounds...7.1 allows an either-or-or-both configuration

My original question was why 7.1, not 6.1 where actually 6 different channels of sound exist on DTS-ES and DD-EX. I know 7.1 makes some difference from 5.1, but I don't get the benefits of 7.1 over 6.1 with 6 sound sources. Some said that 7.1 is better because the room is bigger, but then how your center channel speaker is handling more important front-side ALONE?

1. One artifact of human hearing is that we can sometimes mistake a sound coming from directly behind us for one that originated in front of us. Two speakers avoids this.
2. 2 speakers fed a decorelated signal provide a more encompasing suround field than a single speaker.
3. Presumably, you want things coming from surround back _behind_ the audience and not off in one corner. Two speakers will do this for people who are seated off center.
