Idk if I'd call it unfortunate.

Warner Archive is great, but at least in this instance, all copies will have pressed discs, and not just the first few batches. So, if you buy it a year from now, you'd still be getting pressed discs. And that's a big plus.

Also, with this being a wide release, there's gonna be a bigger spotlight on it, which matters!
To this date there have been exactly 0 Warner Archive Blu Ray releases that were not pressed discs.

Does anyone else remember a very tongue-in-cheek Superman story from one of the comics of the early 1940's ( reprinted many decades later when I saw it ) where Clark Kent took Lois Lane to a movie theatre showing one of these Superman cartoons ? If I recall correctly Clark had to find unique ways to distract Lois from finding out his secret http://superman.nu/tales3/cartoonhero/identity from the cartoon on screen.

Just preordered using the link. Thank you! I love these animated films and still have my old laser disc set, plus a newer DVD release. Absolutely overjoyed about the new restoration! I have a question for the experts on the forum -- what would be a good book and/or historical article about the creation of these films? -- even if in the context of an overall examination of the Fleischer studios? I'd love to read more in depth about them. Thank you again.

I ended up as a first step purchasing "Out of the Inkwell: Max Fleischer and the Animation Revolution" by Richard Fleischer. It's on my Kindle awaiting perusal. I imagine that there are probably other books to supplement this "official" bio by his son but it'll be a start. If anyone has other suggestions, suggest away.

Somewhat off topic, but...why has Warner Bros been so slow to bring us the three extra-length Technicolor Popeye cartoons on Blu-ray? Seems to me they'd have fallen within the release years of all the shorts they did put on Blu...and they are all Fleischer titles.

Well, that's a subject matter for another thread, especially with this Blu-ray release having PQ issues and people wanting to talk about that specific problem.

Who woulda guessed there would be a good chance these shorts looked better in SD on the previous set at the end of the day?

I was really looking forward to this Bluray release. :( I love these shorts. I have had the DVD set since it was first released. I thought for sure that these New Restored 17 shorts would look Amazing. The color Popeye shorts look Great !! I thought these would look just as good if not better. Been waiting to see a review with photos. May 16 is the release date. I was going to get the HD Digital version. I have the SD Digital shorts on Prime Video. Will my SD version Upgrade to HD ? Disappointed :(<_<:rolleyes::confused::angry:

If Bill is correct, it’s an expensive (and embarrassing) error that should not have occurred. Easy enough to go back to the scans.

Or could simply be poor, compression and QC.

Just throw some $$$ at it and make it go away.

But once again - and I’ve heard no confirmation of a problem - EVERYTHING comes down to the intent of the individuals working on a project - and a combination of their experience in film history, technology and eye for perfection.

I had so much anticipation about this release, and now I'm utterly disappointed if that's the case.
I hate degrained animation (and that's why I haven't bought most Disney classic animation films).

I am very upset that Warners has totally screwed this release up!!!! If the Digital Bits guy got the final product, this is
very disappointing!!! They have been doing such a wonderful Job with their Looney Tunes ,why did they screw this
up? Is there other reasons we don't know about? Why weren't the people involved with the Looney Tunes doing these?

I’m not seeing a big problem here.

It’s an easy fix after a problem somewhere in the pipeline. Two changes I’d make immediately would be to put someone better educated on what films can and SHOULD look like at the very end of the pipeline in QC, so that replication can be avoided - and more important - have some with more technical / historical experience overseeing the entire project.

This is Extremely simple stuff. And I’m certain the error(s) will be fixed, and at this point, end of story until the fix arrives.

As an aside, I finally saw Mr. Hunt’s review - as opposed to the posted tweet, and can add one thing. He notes a 16 bit 4k scan. Nothing special here. 10 or 16 bit, the final product should (and can) look very much akin to a 35mm nitrate dye transfer print.

Nothing more to be said.

So you think they will fix this disc before it comes out? Or is it that you hope they will do a better job next time?
