Got totally buried by Warner Bros, upon theatrical release.
They are branding it as a "Max original" upon its debut there on December 20. So I guess they didn't want something they are branding as a streaming film to have a wide release. I would have absolutely paid to go see it in a theater if it had played near me.

It is hardly a Max original and shame on them and Warner Bros. for implying it is. And bigger shame to Warner Bros. for pooping all over a man whose films have made them so much money. And the joke is they thought it was going to get reamed, review-wise - well, it didn't. And it's a really good movie. So, only NOW are they pushing it with the unions for awards.

The argument I saw somewhere (though kind of weak) was that the studio thought it was a very well-made film, but didn't see it having any "hook" that would bring box office success from a wide audience. They claim they didn't want what could be Eastwood's last film to be reported in the press as a box office disappointment/bomb, but gave it an award-qualifying limited release.

Well, that's bullshit if true -- this is Clint f**king Eastwood we're talking. He almost never makes a bad movie, and even his mediocre ones (I would suggest MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL, BLOODWORK and TRUE CRIME might arguably be among them) were a draw simply because of the vast legion of loyal Eastwood fans. Warner Bros. did indeed screw over one of its biggest cash cows simply (I assume) because a few execs who know nothing of fan loyalty and might even be ignorant of the director's incredible track record decided it might not catch on. Not all of his films were huge hits or are even well-known (5:17 TO PARIS, for example), but that is a rare example. The man is still marketable, because he mostly makes terrific movies.

JUROR NO. 2 might end up being Eastwod's final film, although with this guy, you can never say never! He should have had a better-supported wide release with attendant good marketing. Because they didn't, it looks like WB is going to have to rely on foreign markets, streaming and physical media to pick up the financial slack. Missed Op, in my opinion.

Really? Did you see Cry Macho? have you even purchased it on blu-ray, let alone 4K UHD? Let's see, how many people on this forum even bothered to leave a comment on the Cry Macho release thread?

Sorry, but few people commenting now have had patience with his rather spotty late period: Cry Macho, The Mule and The 15:17 to Paris. Jersey Boys, Trouble With The Curve, J. Edgar and Hereafter didn't set the box office on fire either. It's a long time since Clint Eastwood has been a cash cow. And that is, after all, what the American Movie Industry is about nowadays. If it isn't a franchise, Christopher Nolan, or a superhero movie, then good luck getting it greenlit by a studio.

Still, it's a shame that Juror #2 hasn't been given a chance. I hope that many of Clint Eastwood's films will be remastered and afforded physical media releases. I'll buy them.

The Mule did pretty well. Over $100 million domestic and $175 million worldwide. But that's been his only real hit since Sully in 2016. Warner went ultra-wide with Cry Macho (nearly 4000 theaters) and only grossed a total of $16 million.

Great movie— saw it last month. Gripping and very well-acted. Disappointed that this isn't getting the 4K treatment.

Saw Juror#2 this evening and really enjoyed it. It defies logic why WB did not push it harder as a cinema release.
This film is well written, acted and directed. if this is Clint Eastwood’s final film he has retired on a high note.
Highly recommended.

I hope this is one of those cases where Amazon is just listing the title at MSRP and a discount will kick in later. This was a really good movie and I think worth owning, but $38.99 is absurd. That's more than what I pay for Criterions on release day.

Also, since this is a WB/SDS title, it's weird that Gruv hasn't put this up for order yet. They have been cheaper than Amazon from time to time.

That press release is really something. First we get:

Written and Directed by Legendary Filmmaker Clint Eastwood,
and then:
Academy Award winner Eastwood directs from a screenplay by Jonathan Abrams

Marketing people should do a bit of proof reading before releasing their sales puff.

Update: For those interested, Gruv added Juror #2. But unfortunately they are charging the same $38.99 as Amazon. I would like to have this, but not for that much.

First, Warner Bros. trashes the film's theatrical release. Quoting Quentin Tarantino in yesterday's Variety:

"Well, what the fuck is a movie now? What — something that plays in theaters for a token release for four fucking weeks? All right, and by the second week you can watch it on television. I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns. I mean, it was bad enough in ’97. It was bad enough in 2019, and that was the last fucking year of movies. That was a shit deal, as far as I was concerned, the fact that it’s gotten drastically worse? And that it’s just it’s a show pony exercise. Now the theatrical release, you know, and then like yeah, in two weeks, you can watch it on this [streamer] and that one.”

Well, Warner Bros. hardly even bothered with the theatrical release of Juror #2 in the first place.

Second, Warner Bros. can't be bothered to give it a whistles-and-bells physical media release, but half-heartedly dump a blu-ray months after this was streaming on Max. Not a steelbook, no booklet, no supplements of any interest. As if this is of any value to a collector.

Thirdly, a week before release date, it's still at a price point, which is more than a Criterion 4K UHD, or other boutique collector's editions. Is Warner Bros. trying to recoup its outlay by charging a fortune and hoping this will sell millions?

I predict no sales and then the marketing department will triumphantly pat themselves on the back and laugh, "See? How right we were to just bury this movie". And then in four weeks, this will be retailing for $9.99, before they drive the unsold units to landfill and literally bury the film properly, once and for all.
