It wasn’t an absolutely bad film just a misfire. So many decisions that were the wrong ones when it came to scripting and production. Why this cost $200 million is beyond me- it obviously went to salaries because not much of it is on the screen to me. The first film was memorable as a modern day take of “Taxi Driver” crossed with “The King of comedy” (which might chafe Marty’s hide considering how he feels about comic book films). Like some, the first one transcended its origin to become something much different than a traditional popcorn film. Hayes clearly was going in the same gritty direction of Nolan, Reeves (this fits in with the feel of “The Batman”) and even the “Penguin” series.

I will say, despite the fact that I didn’t like it, I could see critical reappraisal once time has passed. Time seems to forgive those who make bold choices with their films, art and literature. This was a bold but misguided choice. To those that loved it, go for it. I will be skipping the Blu and 4K.

Still glad to see a home video release for the film. Perhaps Warner will make up some of the loss. It did terrific overseas compared to here.

I’m sure it will look terrific.

For sure! This is a cult film waiting to happen! Box office popularity rarely indicates the quality of a movie. Posterity will be the final judge. A of lot of fans of the first film turned against it before it even opened once they heard it was -gasp-oh the horror!- a musical!!!

The Sight and Sound reviewer liked it, particularly for the songs and Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score.

Absolutely. It's dogshit awful so of course it will gain a fanbase down the road. Exorcist II and Showgirls are beloved but are still terrible and this will join that pantheon.

And for the record, I have no problem with it being a musical. That was one of the only aspects of the movie that was good.

Amazing how much that PR references the original film, rather than talking about this one. ;)
