I was at Best Buy last night and they had one on display, w/ Madden 2002. WOW, it looked great. At first there was only one person playing it when I came over to take a look. Then all of a sudden man.......a big audience. We were taking turns playing a quarter and discussing why each other wanted to buy one.
Why do you guys think XBOX, GAMECUBE, PS2. I haven't seen the GAMECUBE yet, but XBOX looks pretty damn unstoppable IMO.

This should be in gaming hardware I believe, someone will move it eventually.
Well, there are alot of other issues, other than system power, etc. that determine if a system is unstoppable. Sony has an amazing lead in the userbase department that both MS and Nintendo will be hard pressed to catch up with. That lead along ensures developer support. Some amazing games coming in the next few months for all systems helps them all. I myself don't plan to get an Xbox, mainly because I refuse to help Microsoft possibly monopolize a market I actually give a damn about. They started off talking about only caring about gaming, etc., etc., but have slowly veered off and talked about internet gateways, other uses of the hardware, standardization. IMO, MS never would have entered this market if two things had happened -- 1) if WebTV had taken off (that's the one owned by MS right?) and 2) if Sony hadn't made a big deal about the PS2 online capabilities. Quite simply, Microsoft foresaw Windows being left out in the cold when it came to "living room" applications and that's the only reason they're entering this business.

I too am anti-xbox. Besides all the above good points, I have two small kids, and not one of the games for xbox looks engaging/appropriate for kids. PS2 is a little expensive if you discount the dvd capability, and I don't want my 5 year old with expensive dvd's in his room to get destroyed anyway.
Xbox seems like an expensive, complicated (why do we need a HD for games?) and not with gameplay at heart as you mentioned. I'm not convinced that anyone at Microsoft knows how to have fun...
We have our eye on the game cube, $199 base price is not bad and I have seen it at toysrus and it looks great also. Processor power can be deceptive when talking about graphics, as the GPU has more to do with gameplay than the CPU. The games are more family oriented, no really violent or R rated ones. That said the games so far look entertaining and refreshingly different from what we're used to. Pikmen specifically looks like it'll be a winner with the kids. Also an RF controller is in the works, finally am manufacturer builds a decent wireless controller!!!
Hope this is lucid.. gotta go take the kiddies to Monsters Inc..

You're right, this thread will eventually get moved, but until then...
I'm surprised by all the anti-Microsoft rhetoric. Maybe it's because I live in Seattle, or maybe it's because I have worked there as a consultant, but I like Microsoft and I think they have done amazing things for the high tech industry.
I think they will eventually win significant market share and most likely usurp Sony as the leader. Sony is not very nice to their game developers. They don't make it easy or as cost effective as they could. Microsoft is the PC beast they are today because they made it so easy to build a development career on their technologies. They are wonderful at building massive developer backing and then supporting those developers. They will do this with the XBOX. They will make it very easy and cost effective for companies to design fantastic games and Sony will continue to lose developer support. As this happens, people, even anti-Microsoft people, will buy the XBOX to be able to play the best games.
Fortunately for the consumer, there is room in this sector for more competition. Microsoft will not be the only game station. I believe that all three companies will always continue to struggle for market share. One thing that I know…with Microsoft coming into the sector, prices for games will finally come down.
Just my opinion.
Thanks,
Jeff

I think he meant "Hard Drive" as opposed to "High Definition".
Personally, I'll get one eventually, since it has set of the old techno-lust. It looks like too cool a toy not to have.

While I don't have a HDTV, I will someday, and I want to go back and play these games in HD!!
That having been said, I'm still getting a GC first.
But I still have every intention of getting a Xbox, and by years end if everything falls right.

Yes, I meant hard drive. Man, I am drooling for everything in high-def! Need that big screen first, but patience will see that out...
I rushed that post a little. I am *not* anti-microsoft. I think a better way to put my feeling about xbox/ms is that I don't think they have game 'feng shue' (whatever that is) and so far the games for xbox just don't impress me. The platform is expensive, and I just wonder if microsoft 'gets it'.
What's also going to happen is ps2 going down in price to compete, and with the largest base of existing games ever, it will be hard for the masses to outlay premium $$ for a platform that's not *that* much better. I think ps2 and the cube will duke it out long term.
Hey, it's just my .05 (wish they'd ban pennies, but I know, I know, that would starve x million poor kids blah blah blah - where do they come up with that stuff?)

game prices will never come down.
$50 standard, sometimes $40 or $60..... seems reasonable to me, given the resources it now takes to publish a AAA title.
Sure, Walmart will alawys have some $10-$15 crap games, but I bet we continue to see $50 the standard for a while to come.
Even PC games, which don't have to pay console liscensing fees, hover around $40...

I'm (sort of) in your boat, Graeme. I'm wanting an XBox pretty bad, but I've already committed funds to the GCN (which I also want pretty bad) and I can't afford both. Especially in the same week!

I'll have to hold out until after Christmas, but definitely then...

Well, I want one and may get it, but I need more widescreen support at least before I throw down the cash. HD would be even better, but I will hold out for at least widescreen 480p. I mean Halo NOT supporting widescreen is reason enough for me to hold off a little while longer.

I'll likley be replacing my well worn Dreamcast with an X Box sometime between now and the end of the year.

After playing Rogue Leader and Luigi's Mansion on the GC and then Halo and NFL Fever on Xbox, I've decided that I need an Xbox sooner than later. The GC didn't impress me either in games or controller while Halo was wonderful and NFL Fever seemed like a pretty good football game (although I'll try out Madden before I commit to picking up any football games). Xbox just seems like the best fit for me when I look at all three systems.
