Fortunately, DVD Profiler can arrange my collection by the release date, and it shows I still have "42" 1997 releases. There are several DVD's that I have upgraded to a newer version, (those are no longer listed), but I'm sure my children would still have all of them somewhere.

I have From Russia With Love and Austin Powers. However, I didn't hop on the DVD train until July 1998.

I wish I had got to see them earlier, I got into DVDs in 1999... Any chance anyone as coverart and full size pictures of cases and such, jewel cases included? Merely for comparison of course. :)

Thanks,

Ryan

1997, huh? Let's see...

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (my very first DVD, God forgive me)
Blade Runner
Strangers on a Train

Hmmmm. My ex-wife still has her original edition of CHITTY-CHITTY BANG BANG. Does that count? :D

Now, 1998 is a whole different story. I've got LOTS of DVDs from that year!

Ok, I confess that I had around 30 DVD's before I ever got my first player (March '98), and the only one I've dumped has been CCBB.

Goldfinger was why I signed up here in the first place. After a year of lurking someone couldn't play it on their PC, and I knew the correct settings.

WOW, I was going to say none. So far I have upgraded all my DVDs and even sold some I thought would get upgraded (Batman, Blade Runner) and sold anything non-anamorphic.

Man I bought like 40 DVDs in the first year alone. I remeber coming home with Lethal Weapon and Batman. IIRC among my first were:
Lethal Weapon
Batman
Star Trek: First Contact
Terminator 2

Going through peoples list I know realize I still have
Austin Power IMOM and Rumple in the Bronx

I also have Spawn which I lent to a friend who has had it for like 3 years now...

DVD Profiler is notorious for having inaccurate information including release dates because it is an open database and a lot of incorrect information gets submitted.

Eraser was not the first DVD even as demo material. Eraser was released to stores on 3/25/97 - the same day as all of the initial titles were released. The only DVDs to actual get an official release date prior to 3/25/97 were a few IMAX DVDs including the first printing of Tropical Rainforest and Africa: The Serengeti which were all released one week earlier.

Wizard of Oz was the first available film on DVD for demo back in 1996, but there were even earlier non feature length film demo DVDs. One of the very first demo DVDs that was available to the public was A&M's "Vision" DVD.

I still have the very first dvd I bought before I had a player, Warner's Special Edition of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. (But, seeing what they're going for on Ebay, I'd rather offer it to HTFers willing to make a reasonable offer ;) ).
The first Criterion dvd that I bought was BRAZIL. (see above paranthetical statement ;) ).

In August of 1997, in anticipation of my new PC arriving with a newfangled DVD-ROM drive, I bought The Player and Reservoir Dogs. I have since double-dipped on Reservoir Dogs, but my Player is still there, my #1 DVD. It's been exactly 7 years, and now 441* DVDs later, with no sign of stopping!

CDE,

CS

*This is counting by bar code, so for example, an 8-title box set only counts as one.

I still have the following (all are 1997, at least according to DVD Profiler):

A Time To Kill
Batman
Blade Runner: Director's Cut
Beetlejuice
Blazing Saddles
Mars Attacks!
Rumble in the Bronx
Freeway
Species
The Pelican Brief
Assassins
Demolition Man
Poltergeist
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Contact: Special Edition
The Client
Conspiracy Theory

The only I haven't replaced that I could is Blazing Saddles, I just haven't gotten around to it. I don't know that I'd replace any of these though, except maybe Poltergeist and Batman.

I still have:
All 4 Batman films(yes, even BATMAN AND ROBIN!)
STRANGERS ON A TRAIN
CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI(looks and sounds just fine to me)
HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME(pretty nasty looking, but that's because the film only survives in 16mm dupes)
FORBIDDEN PLANET

Sold off most of the others(CUTTHROAT ISLAND, TOTAL RECALL, etc.).

Warner and MGM titles were generally $24.98 retail. You could get them in-stores for $19.98. Other studios did not always comply with that pricing (slightly higher), but it was an early standard.

I still have a large number of DVD's from 1997.

God no. The vast majority of catalog titles were sold at full MSRP, sometimes even more (and MSRP back then was very pricy, sometimes $45!). New releases were sometimes above the $25 range, consistently.

I still have 147 original titles from 1997, including a fairly complete set of Columbia titles in jewel cases. The first DVDs I bought were all Columbia titles (In the Line of Fire and Legends of the Fall at $40CAN each), since Warner was limited to its test cities until July (most of my Warner titles were $22-30CAN).

That early version of Africa: The Serengetti was attrocious from a compression standpoint, but was still one of the only demo discs available.

Menus on those early Columbia titles were as basic as could be. Things have come a long way since then.
