According to the Oxford English Dictionary:
    For Pete's Sake
Used in various mild exclamations and phrases expressive of exasperation or annoyance; esp. in phr. for Pete's sake.
1924 Dialect Notes V. 274 For the love of Pete, for Pete's sake. 1942 N. BALCHIN Darkness falls from Air ix. 170 Why in the name of Pete didn't you say so? 1949 N. MARSH Swing, Brother, Swing iv. 59 Carlisle heard Mr. Bellairs whisper under his breath: ‘For the love of Pete!’ 1959 W. GOLDING Free Fall vi. 129 Marry me, Taffy, for Pete's sake marry me. 1973 ‘B. MATHER’ Snowline xviii. 223 For Pete's sake don't ask bloody fool questions. 1975 Listener 24 July 115/1 For Pete's sake when will so-called ‘experts’..get it into their noddles that rising wages and prices are inflation.
    And according to http://www.asktherick.com/Live%20Pages/issue7.htm

    So who is Pete?
Etymologists (people who study the origins of words/expressions) are unanimous in their belief that Peter was probably Saint Peter. Their reasoning, Peter is about as close to God as you can get without committing actual blasphemy.

Actually I'm doubtful about the St. Peter connection. It sounds a bit too neat. I just think that people got in the habit of substituting a person's name in phrases where "God" would normally appear (to avoid blasphemy) and "Pete" happened to be the one to catch on. Similar to "Joe Blow", "Joe Sixpack", "John Doe", etc. I doubt anyone has tied them to St. Joseph. [IMG]
(Actually, I keep trying to get people to adopt "Mike Sixpack", but it is an uphill battle.)
    Regards,
    Joe

An even more perplexing question -- who is this Herb guy, and how can he be making chicken in so many restaurants? I see Herb-cooked chicken on lots of menus.

Herb was a guy who showed up at a Burger King every now and then and if you spotted him you would win a lot of money. A bigger question is: who is this Shirley woman who can't be serious about anything?

Anyway, Pete is St. Peter and he sometimes sits in for Christ whenever Christ has to take a bathroom break. But sometimes St. Peter can't fill in on short notice, and that's when you have to say "For crying out loud!"

I'm writing a dictionary of colloquial Englsih for Asperger patients at the moment, and I'm going through the origins of various phrases.

Regarding 'for Pete's sake', it falls into the same group as 'for pity's sake', 'for God's sake' etc. Though not certain, chances are that 'for Pete's sake' started off as 'for St Peter's sake' and over time became shortened. There are numerous examples of old religious oaths becoming everyday relatively innocuous phrases (e.g. look up the etymology of the Brit phrases 'streuth' and 'crumbs' or the American 'gee whizz').

The Pete that is used is for St. Peter, the other expressions are for God sake, for Christ sake and for Pete sake, obviously the first two are using the Lord's name in vain so someone just used Peter's. Some might think it's too neat but that is what it is; there is no other explanation that comes close.
