Irrespective of the music genre, or whether it's a solo artist or a group, who for you have been the best new (preferably English speaking and singing) music acts of 2005 and please say why for each ones named ?

The Bravery - S/T, easily my favorite CD of 2005 so far. They've got the early 80's alternative sound down to an art. I've played it for friends and they couldn't believe it was an '05 CD.

Can we use "Older" artists that maybe didn't become "mainstreme" till 05'?

Then count me in for "Francis the Mute" by the Mars Volta. When I first heard "the widow" on the old 99.1 hfs, I didn't think much of them, but after sampling a few songs on amazon, I gave the album a try. I've had it about 4 months and it rarely has been out of my cd player. Hell, i even today went on itunes, to make the song "Cassandra Geminni" as one long 32:30 song, so i can play it on windows media player as one song. Mainly because the song is spread over 7 tracks on the album.

For progressive rock Porcupine Tree and 'Deadwing'. It might seem strange to recommend a band that in one form or another have made something like 12-15 albums as new , but there seems to have been a near media blackout on Steven Wilson and co.
Except for maybe the last 2 albums , no other 2 albums in their catalogue sound alike.Very interesting and highly recommended .

I agree with Manus. Although not a new band. I just got into Porcupine Tree this year. In Absentia and Deadwing are both very good, and a nice balance to Dream Theater's disappointing Octavarium.
