Who are your 3 or 4 favorite TV cop or crimefighting characters (be it anyone who's a local, state, or federal cop, or a legal prosecutor) from any current,
older recent, or classic (English language) live action or animated shows and please say why, for each one named.

Joe Friday (Dragnet) - THE classic TV cop; my all-time favorite and I like the 50s Friday better than the 60s Friday.

Theo Kojak (Kojak) - Again, I like the original 70s version with Telly Savalas. Kojak was a tough cop with heart.

Superman (George Reeves) - Truth, Justice and the American Way. Need I say more?

Frank Pembleton- Homicide:Life on the Street - could get any info from any person in the box.

Columbo - no detail to small or insignificant.

Andy Sipowicz- NYPD Blue - gut instinct all the way.

Perry Mason - could never be outsmarted by anyone.

Honorable Mention until January - Frank Furillo- Hill St. Blues - best morally decent precinct captain ever.

Starsky & Hutch - the original buddy cop duo.
Crockett & Tubbs - the definitive 80s TV cop team.
Tom Magnum - "I know what you're thinking..."

    And that's five...

Well, Greg's definition would seem to exclude private eyes like Magnum and superheros like Supes.

That leaves "official" investigators of one stripe or another. As a long-time cop and lawyer show afficiando, I'd have a hard time keeping a list down to three or four. But two who immediately come to mind (partly because of the length of their tenure, but also the excellence of the performances and in one case the complexity of the character) are Andy Sipowicz from NYPD Blue and Lenny Briscoe from Law and Order. I'll have to think a little more to fill the three and four slots. [IMG]

Hmm... I can only think of 1 right now... and she tops my list regardless of whether or not I can think of 2 more:

Staying away from the more hard-boiled, realistic, and straight procedurals:

#1 - Matthew Sikes (Alien Nation) - a very flawed human being, becoming enlightened along the way; simply one of my all-time favorite TV characters ever

#2 - Dave Starsky (Starsky & Hutch) - what cop could ever want a better friend watching his back?

#3 & 4 - Rita Lance and Chris Lorenzo (Silk Stalkings) - one of the most enjoyable portrayals of a (mostly) platonic male/female cop duo ever (with all due respect to Mulder/Scully, Hunter/McCall, Benson/Stabler, et al)

#5 - Brisco County Jr. (The Adventures Of Brisco County Jr.) - Bruce Campbell...'nuff said

Alright, i'm officially disappointed in this forum, nobody has mentioned Detective Sledge Hammer from the short lived yet hilarious show Sledge Hammer! yet!? [IMG]

He's my first pick, the loudest, most violent prone, trigger-happy, gun-loving (literally), criminal scum-hating, yogurt eatin' creep-loathing lawman to ever clean up a mean street, and he did it with bullet's and a smile...trust him, he know's what he's doing.

    Linda,
i'm glad that you mentioned Rita and Chris from Silk Stalkings, I used to love that show! I was bummed when Chris was shot and killed in the final episode.

My third would have to be Lt. Frank Drebin from Police Squad.

And my forth (or fifth if you count Silk Stalkings as two picks) is easy...Adrian Monk from Monk of course, as was said he was a cop, and I hope will be again one day.
